"Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. "
-- Warren Bennis
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

We are back to warmer weather. Spring sports teams are absolutely loving the warmer days! The great weather and the beautiful Spring foliage is just in time for a great Homecoming 2016, this weekend.

Homecoming is the time for our Cadets to meet and talk with Cadets who have gone before them. Alumni might be in college, in business, government, military or retired-- but they all have a story and the shared experience of Hargrave. Seniors especially will have an opportunity to network with Hargrave alumni during the Alumni Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Every year connections are made over a plate of eggs, biscuits and gravy.

We are in record breaking territory for the number of alumni planning to attend this year's homecoming. That said, parents are absolutely welcomed on campus! If you want to watch the Cadet Parade on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m., please join us.

Hargrave's 2014 Tattoo
Hargrave's 2014 Tattoo

Additionally, join the Cadets for their Tattoo Ceremony on Friday, April 22 at 5;30 p.m. (No, the Tattoo is not Cadets lining up to get a tattoo. It's an "Old Army" tradition of a formal military retreat ceremony to lower the National Colors complete with patriotic music. It's not a long ceremony, but I promise you'll be moved by it.) There is even a golf outing at 10:00 a.m. at the Danville Country Club Friday morning. Homecoming and reunion activities will fill much of Friday evening and most of Saturday.

sophomore challenge
Sophomores overcome at the 2016 Sophomore Challenge.

The Class of 2018 enjoyed a corporate style leadership retreat in the Sophomore Challenge this past weekend. The Sophomore Challenge is based on team building and leadership skills offered at Goose Creek Adventure Learning Center in Moneta, Virginia.

For our sophomores, USAF ROTC students from Liberty University guided them through the Challenge course. The guides organized nine man teams for a 12 station course. At each station the guide chooses a leader from the team and explains the scenario. The leader must listen closely to the scenario instructions and then relay those instructions to his team members. Leaders must assign tasks and delegate. Each team has 15 minutes to overcome each scenario.

With different ways to solve each scenario, leaders often take different approaches. Their leadership and communication skills are challenged. One of the key lessons our young men learn--how to be a good follower is just as important as being a good leader. Leaders and teams are also rated on who led and which team worked together the best. At the end of the day, awards, camaraderie and an all you can eat pizza party followed. The sophomore really enjoyed connecting as a class and sharing their scenario solutions from the day.

The Hargrave Highlanders also attended the Loch Norman Highland Games in Huntersville, North Carolina this past weekend. This has quickly turned into the pinnacle event of the year for the Highlanders, as they experience Scottish heritage and events such as the Massed Bands, solo performances and group performances. While they attend as high schoolers, the participate as equals with both college and adult bagpiping groups. The full story follows.

Tomorrow our Postgraduate Basketball team heads to Richmond to visit with Commonwealth Governor Terry McAuliffe. After winning the National Prep Championship on March 9, 2016. This is extraordinary recognition that is well deserved for a team with a national title and a 47-1 record. It is an amazing achievement.

I'm looking forward to a great Homecoming, Mother Day's weekend and graduation. This is when Hargrave is at its absolute best. I welcome your time on campus.

Best regards,

Don Broome

The Loch Norman Highland Games
Hargrave Highlanders

Hargrave Highlanders at Loch Norman Games
The Hargrave Highlanders and VMI Pipe Band cadets selected as honor guard for the Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Loch Norman Highland Games. Ceremony was conducted by the Scottish American Military Association from Charlotte_ North Carolina.

By Tim Carpenter
The Highlanders proudly represented Hargrave with their participation in the Loch Norman Highland Games at the historic Rural Hall Farm in Huntersville, North Carolina on Saturday, April 16, 2016. With a very early morning wake up, bus ride and clear, beautiful day, the Highlanders arrived at the Games around 9:00 a.m. They were greeted by parents, their families and a very large contingent of pipers and drummers from other bands.

We set up the beautiful 10'X20' Highlander shelter that was donated last year by our parents group. We opened our camp chairs, set up folding tables and opened instrument cases as the Highlander parents brought in huge amounts of food and beverage to compliment our day at the games.

The Highlanders led by Cadet Pipe Major Walter Kasica, Cadet Pipe SGT James Zheng and Cadet Drum SGT Alex Braswell prepared for participation in the opening ceremony, called the Massed Bands. The total participation included 21 Pipe bands and approximately 275 pipers and drummers from as far away as Wisconsin. Schools like St. John's Northwestern Military Academy, VMI, St. Andrews University, North Carolina State University and many others were represented.

Following the opening ceremony, the Scottish American Military Society from Charlotte held a "Flag Retirement Ceremony" on the main field. Our Highlanders were selected to participate in the honor guard along with the VMI pipe band cadets. We were the flag bearers for many different flags including those of our U.S. Military services. Your sons were once again stellar ambassadors for Hargrave.

The following Cadet pipers participated: Adriano DeAngelis; Kasica; Nick Rice; Brandon Sexton; Bennett Soles; Josh Strack; and Zheng. Cadet Snare drummers included Braswell and Najair Anthony. Our Bass drummer was Cadet Andre Tomlinson.

Our Cadets experienced watching solo and band competitions, visiting the vendors and seeing the many cultural exhibits during the day. The trip truly inspired our young men and offered them an enriching opportunity to associate and learn from other schools and organizations.

I personally want to acknowledge and thank SM Sgt Mike Woods for his help and support on our trip. Special guest and former Highlander leader, MPCO Gordon Farrell and his wife Molly attended and supported our effort as well. The "Gold Supporter Award" goes to Ken and Sharon Kasica, the parents of Cadet Kasica. For the past three years, Sharon has been the very best and most important organizer, fundraiser and parent group director ever. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her effort and delicious food and for the many parent contacts.

We experienced over 50% parent support for and at the games again this year making our trip a huge success. Thank you parents!

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, MCPO Robert Wickboldt took the Cadets to the Salem Academy prom. The Cadets looks sharp for the girl's school event. The Cadets enjoyed the outing, the dancing and, of course, making new friends.

On Sunday, April 17, 2016, Mrs. Ashley Hill and CPT Ed Ott took the Cadets to the Go-Kart track at the Virginia International Raceway. For two hours, the Cadets enjoyed exclusive use of the track. Drivers switched every ten or 15 minutes with race finishes and data provided by a race computer. It was a beautiful Sunday for racing.

Dr. Steve Griffin took the Cadets participating in the Spring Scuba class to Belews Lake, North Carolina for their first open Water Dive. The Cadets said it was an absolute blast getting into the open water. Sunday's weather was like a summer day on the lake. Next Sunday, the class will have their second open water dive which leads to their their Full PADI Lifetime Dive Certification.

When it come to deciding on your gift to Hargrave, please know that those $10, $25, $50 and $100 gifts do add up and do help a tremendous amount!

Why Give?
The boarding school landscape has changed a lot over the past 10 plus years. There are more and more smaller academies that have been started which means it's a much more competitive market.

With that being said, IGTH allows Hargrave to hire and keep the best faculty, staff and coaches. Your support is needed more than ever!

Our goal is to raise participation in all constituencies within the Hargrave family, ultimately reaching 1,000 donors for the Academy's fiscal year ending May 31. That will be a 100% increase from the year before but less than our all time high of 1,600 donors. To make a gift you can go to the link below.
