Congratulations to incoming Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Clinical Nurse Leader students who received their white coats at a ceremony held September 22 at UMSON. The purpose of the White Coat Ceremony is to instill a commitment to providing compassionate care among future health professionals entering nursing schools. Nursing students at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) will receive their white coats at a ceremony being held October 6 at USG.  
Alumni Celebrate Reunion 2015
UMSON alumni from DIN and BSN classes ending in a "5" or "10" celebrated their reunion years September 19 at the School of Nursing. Alumni Association President  Christine Shippen, MS '98, BSN '73 , served as emcee for the program, which included a presentation of UMSON highlights by Dean Jane Kirschling and the induction of the Class of 1965 into the Heritage Class.  Jessica Galang, BSN Class of 2016 , and  Mustafa Alrubaiee, MS Class of 2016 , shared their inspiration for choosing nursing and the importance of the scholarships they received from UMSON.

Geiger-Brown Delivers Edmunds Lecture
The annual Millicent Geare Edmunds Lecture, held September 19 at UMSON, featured a talk on "Sleep, Sleepiness, and Fatigue in Nurses: How Organizations and Nurses Can Solve This Problem," delivered by UMSON Assistant Professor  Jeanne Geiger-Brown, PhD '01, RN, FAAN .

The presentation, which followed the Alumni Reunion luncheon, included scientifically grounded interventions to be used by nursing unites, nursing leadership, and nurses themselves to reduce fatigue. 
Representatives from AACN & CCNE Visit UMSON

Representatives from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) visited UMSON on October 1 to gain a better understanding of day-to-day operations and the issues facing nursing schools today. The group toured the University of Maryland Medical Center's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and UMSON's clinical simulation laboratories and bench research laboratories.

Faculty Members Participate in Run/Walk Fundraiser

Ben Canha, MSN, RN , clinical instructor at the Universities at Shady Grove, organized a team to participate in the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition 5K Run/3K Walk fundraiser, held September 20 in Annapolis. "Team Pat Harris" participated in memory of beloved faculty member Pat Harris.

the Clinical Nurse Leader program in 2011, save the date and plan to attend Reunion 
2016. The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at UMSON.

MaryLou Watson, MS, BSN '75 , vice president of nursing at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, Md., was recently appointed president of the Maryland Board of Nursing. Click here to read more.
Linda Ward Tyler, MS '79 , retired from Wake Tech Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program on October 1, after 35 years of service. Tyler began teaching at Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing in Salisbury, Md., in 1971, and was one of four instructors hired by Salisbury University to develop their BSN program. In 2014, she was selected as one of the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina. Click here to read more.

Welcome New Faculty & Staff
 
Ronald Piscotty Jr., PhD, RN-BC, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as an assistant professor. He comes to UMSON from Wayne State University, where he served as an assistant professor. Piscotty holds a PhD from the University of Michigan. He also holds certification in Informatics Nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
 
Stephanie White, MA , has joined UMSON as office manager/affairs analyst in the Office of the Dean. She has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, including positions as assistant registrar at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus and at Monmouth University, in New Jersey. White holds a Master of Arts degree and Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth University.
Retirements - Administrative Positions


Marjorie Fass, MS, assistant dean for student and academic services, retired October 1 after 23 years with UMSON. A major accomplishment in her role as assistant dean was managing the reorganization of the Office of Student Affairs, a restructuring which improved the operation and efficiency of that office. Marjorie's countless contributions have made a huge impact on the success of UMSON.
 
Jeffrey Johnson, PhD , professor and director, Office of Global Health, retired in June 2015, after 12 years with UMSON. He was founding director of the Office of Global Health and developed and implemented UMSON's strategic plan for global health. Johnson created and directed UMSON's post-master's Global Health Certificate program and taught graduate-level global health courses.

Walt Malecki, BS, assistant dean for administration and finance, retired in July after 17 years with the University of Maryland, Baltimore; he spent the last six with UMSON. Walt helped UMSON navigate its financial resources through state reductions, changing grant portfolios, and major curriculum changes. He also advocated for and supported the staff, across the spectrum of administrative units, to help advance their work.


KudosFACULTY KUDOS
Luana Colloca, MD, PhD , associate professor, presented, "Placebo and Pain: An Exploration of Research and Clinical Findings," at the 9th Congress of the European Pain Federation, held recently in Vienna, Austria. More than 3,700 pain researchers and clinicians participated in the meeting. Click here to read more.

Marian Grant, DNP '10, RN, CRNP, associate professor, recently presented, "End-of-life in America: What We Know and Need to Learn," at the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute, Washington, D.C.

Eun-Shim Nahm, PhD, RN, FAAN , professor, had the following new publication:

Doctoral student Stacey Iobst, BSN '07, RNC-OB, C-EFM,  has been selected to a two-year term on the National Leadership Council of the Graduate Nursing Student Association (GNSA). The new members of the Leadership Council will continue the important work of the inaugural council and help develop future strategic goals, as well as provide advice on future services and programming for the GNSA. Council members represent all regions of the country, with four enrolled in public institutions and six enrolled in private schools.  Click here to read more .
