Upcoming Outreach Events

Do you have a passion to see adult literacy increase in Kansas City? Do you want to help bring awareness about all of the programs that Literacy KC offers to the community? We need your help!

Literacy KC is excited to be a part of the KC community and one way we do that is participate in different festivals, volunteer fairs and events.  We are lucky to have been invited to attend several in the upcoming months and are looking for volunteers to be advocates at these events.  Check out the list below to and follow the links to sign up to help LKC spread the word! Questions? Contact Kate Brown at [email protected].
Midwest Tea Fest: May 7th 10 AM - 5 PM

Troost Festival: May 21st 12 PM - 9 PM

First Fridays: 1st Friday of each month 5 PM- 8 PM
Reading is Power Event at St. James United Methodist

St. James United Methodist Church is hosting an adult education rally on Saturday, April 30th from 9:00-12:00 PM. Come see Literacy KC students share the stage with Congressman Emanuel Cleaver who will speak about the importance of adult literacy! St. James UMC is located at 5540 Wayne Ave, KCMO 64110.
Do you have a free hour on a Monday or Wednesday night? Would you like to help welcome students to their class? Can you start immediately? Literacy KC needs your help!

Each night at 5:00 PM the Red Cross building closes but, as you know, Literacy KC holds classes after that time. We are looking for some folks to volunteer an hour of their week to help let students in the building. Catch up on your reading or your latest Netflix addiction and greet students as they arrive at class. This is a quick and easy way to help students but is an extremely vital role. Interested in helping out? Email Kate at [email protected] or call 816-333-9332.

Student Celebration!

Please join us on Wednesday, May 4th from 3:30-5:00 PM at the Literacy KC office for a Hawaiian Luau celebration! Students love seeing their tutors at this very special event, and we want you to help us encourage and celebrate all that our students have accomplished in the past 12 weeks! The Student Advisory Committee is organizing a potluck with, fun, games, and food for all!

Understanding Dyslexia: A Tutor Workshop

A continued education opportunity will be offered to all Literacy KC tutors and instructors on May 18th from 5-8 PM at Literacy KC.

Visiting instructor, Terry Clinefelter  (Pathways to Reading Curriculum Founder), will provide an engaging, dynamic class exclusively for Literacy KC to guide a deeper understanding of dyslexia and other related learning differences. It is highly recommended that tutors attend this informative workshop. Please RSVP by May 11th to Kate Brown at [email protected].
Let's Read: A Family Reading Program

Let's Read is a 12-week program that consists of weekly Family Reading Hours. Each week, we focus on a different theme that teaches parents and children how to make reading fun, such as play, imagine and sing. We have snacks, and every family in attendance leaves with an activity and a free book that is related to the theme of the week. It is our goal that families in this program incorporate these themes into their daily lives, spend more time together, and most importantly, learn how to make reading a family fun activity!

Digital Literacy Tutors Needed!

Digital Life Skills
Every new student at Literacy KC goes through a basic computer skills class called Digital Life Skills. This class helps them to master basic computer skills like clicking a mouse and creating an email. This allows the student to feel comfortable using a computer and the supplementary software used in their reading class.  Click here to sign up to tutor in a Digital Life Skills class.

Assisted Computer Lab Hours Help
Assisted Computer Lab Hours will take place on Tuesdays 1-6 pm and Wednesdays 10-2 pm. This will be an opportunity for our students to come into the Literacy KC Lab and get individualized help with their digital literacy needs.  For some of our students that will be basic computer skills such as how to turn on a computer or utilizing a mouse and for others that will be formatting a Microsoft Word document or the utilization of Google docs. LKC will provide template lesson plans for volunteers to use as needed to assist students with tasks to complete. Click here to sign up to help.

Interested in digital literacy tutoring? Please attend the volunteer orientation for digital literacy tutors on May 4th from 5:30-6:30 pm. All skill levels are invited. We will go over computer lab culture, assisting students with tasks at various need levels and where they can find the template information provided. Questions? Contact Rachel Henderson at [email protected].
