Research
Bookworms increases reading comprehension
Sharon Walpole, UD professor of literacy education,   and Mike McKenna, University of Virginia, have developed  Bookworms, a curriculum that helps elementary students learn phonetic awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, and comprehension through interactive lessons.  They have received a grant through U.S Dept. of Education to further assess and expand this successful initiative.    Read more
Analyzing writing instruction
A literacy research team at UD has been analyzing writing instruction in 50 first-grade classrooms in Delaware. David Coker and his team have developed a computerized observational system that can capture and code instructional foci, classroom dynamics and student behavior. The iSeeNcode program is now available as a free app in the Apple Store.  Read more

Reading Recovery evaluation
UD's CRESP, headed by Henry May, and colleagues
at CPRE have completed a rigorous independent evaluation of the Reading Recovery initiative, demonstrating RR's ability to offer significant gains in the reading achievement for first graders. The report details the implementation strategy, stumbling blocks and framework for success of this i3 scale-up.

Improving fractions instruction
Nancy Jordan and her team at the Center for Improving the Learning of Fractions have developed a fraction sense intervention that offers significant improvements in student understanding related to fraction magnitudes, fraction concepts, and fraction procedures.    Read more

CEHD Making a Global Difference

Inspiring inclusion in Israel 
UD's  National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities  hosted a week-long seminar in Israel, working with agency leaders to address the roadblocks in housing, employment and social interactions faced by people with disabilities and their families.  Read more

CEHD alumna in South Africa
Nichole Montanez did not realize her undergraduate study abroad program to South Africa would dictate her career path. But ten years later, she now serves as a research evaluations consultant for the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender at the University of Pretoria. "Helping people overcome the stigma of HI/AIDs is the greatest challenge of my career. But hope is the biggest reward."
