Newly Funded Ocean Acidification Research

MIT Sea Grant has selected three research projects that focus on understanding the impacts of ocean acidification from our annual request for proposals. The projects will collectively receive approximately $600,000 in federal funding over a two year period.

Green Eelgrass, Blue Carbon

MIT Sea Grant worked with MassBays and the EPA to study carbon storage in eelgrass beds along the coast of Massachusetts. They found that local eelgrass beds may help slow climate change by soaking up carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in sediments for decades.

MIT Sea Grant, Woods Hole Sea Grant and The National Ocean Science Bowl sponsored the 19th Annual Blue Lobster Bowl on March 5th, 2016. This year's tournament was a huge success with 20 teams from 12 Massachusetts high schools competing.

The Sea Grant Network celebrates 50 years

Starting in March Sea Grant will celebrate its 50th anniversary. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed The National Sea Grant College Program Act, and today, that program reaches every coastal and Great Lakes state, as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. The MIT Sea Grant College Program is celebrating 40 years after becoming the first Sea Grant College Program based at a private college in 1976.

New Research Education Specialist Tom Consi 

MIT Sea Grant is excited to announce our new Research Education Specialist, Dr. Tom Consi. Tom isn't actually new to Sea Grant, he worked in our MIT Sea Grant AUV lab back in the '90's. Tom has big plans for our education department and we're excited to see what's next!

Meet Research Engineer Michael Sacarny 

Mike has been working as a research engineer at MIT Sea Grant's AUV lab since 2013. He is passionate about boating and boating safety and recently Mike received the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Nat and Deloris Brady Award for Public Education.
