SCIENCE FAIR

Our Techno Science Fair 2016 was held the evening of April 5. At least 200 parents, grandparents and siblings had a great time watching the presentations (videos, power points, movies) about our experiments. Some were shown on our Ipads, chrome books, or big screen TVs.

Some results proved the hypothesis and some did not, but the designs and results were awesome. Mrs. Palaia, Chairperson of Science- HANC HS, judged the finalists.  Winners were:

Grade 7- Miriam Reitano and Rena Max- First Place
             Mordechai Strauss- Second Place
Nava Lippman, Sasha Isler, Aviva Friedman, Jordyn Weinick- Third place

Grade 8- Olivia Peller - First Place
              Eitan Auerbach- Second Place
              Michael Lieber - Third Place

Thank you to all of the students for their hard work and to Ms. McDougall for mentoring everyone.

MISHMAR
On Thursday, April 14 the third "night Mishmar" of the year took place at HANC in West Hempstead. It started with a delicious meal that everyone loved. After that the kids listened to some inspirational stories shared by Rabbi Harris that corresponded to mishnayot in Pirkei Avot. To prepare for the upcoming holiday, Rabbi Harris then shared a dvar Torah about Pesach and following that we davened maariv.  We would like to thank Rabbi Harris for leading the Mishmar.

Author Visit

On Thursday, April 14th, an author named Bonnie Grubman came to visit the 7th grade. She told us about her journey of becoming an author. It was very interesting to get to learn about the writing process and the creation of a book. From Mrs. Grubman, we learned to never give up and to keep trying even if we do not succeed right away.

Mrs. Grubman also let us ask her lots of questions. She made sure that we all had fun and she even gave away a free book! It was really special to meet an author and to learn all about her. It is always interesting to meet someone who writes for a living, and it is really nice that she travels to different schools to share her story.

  7th GRADE JEWISH HISTORY

Recently in Jewish History class, we were broken up into groups to draw a model of the Beit Hamikdash, after learning about the Chorban HaBayit (destruction of the Beit HaMikdash.) We spent a lot of time and effort drawing them on posters. On the last day, we gave our posters to Morah Hakimian thinking there was going to be a school wide vote on which one was the best on the following day.The day of the "vote" came and Rabbi Hecht came in the room and said something quietly to Morah Hakimian. Then Morah Hakimian very sadly told us that the custodians accidentally threw our posters out.

The moment Morah Hakimian announced that our posters were lost, our hearts dropped. We had spent so much time and effort on our beautiful posters of the Beit Hamikdash. Everyone worked together in their groups. When Morah Hakimian left the room to try and look for them, all of the students panicked. Our first reaction was to say Tehillim. Our second reaction was to figure out where they went. Our third reaction was "why is this piece of paper so important to us? " But it was. After working on them for a whole week, we were so happy about how beautiful they turned out to be.

We thought to ourselves, if we are so upset about our portraits of the Beit Hamikdash going missing, the Jews must have been SO much more upset when the real Beit Hamikdash was being destroyed. Their precious Beit Hamikdash was being taken away from them. Luckily, our posters were returned but we are still in Galut without the real Beit Hamikdash.

PESACH IS COMING

The Middle School students have been busy preparing for Pesach in many ways.  Each grade has been learning the halachot of Pesach.  Each grade made their own haggada filled with Divrei Torah and art for them to share at their seder table.  Of course, the students also spent time cleaning out their lockers from chometz.
Chag Kasher V'Sameach to one and all!

Seventh Grade Amish trip

The seventh graders went on a fantastic trip on April 13.  The day started with a beautiful davening (albeit, at the very early time of  6:00AM).  After davening and breakfast, students boarded a luxurious coach bus to make their way to Lancaster.  The first stop was the Herr's chip factory.  We began with a movie which spoke about the history of the factory.  It was a very inspiring story how Mr. Herr lost everything in a fire and then restarted the company which has grown tremendously.  After the movie, we got a tour of the factory where we saw and smelled how they make the delicious chips, popcorn, and pretzels with and without flavoring.  At the end of the tour, we get hot, fresh (very fresh) chips which were absolutely fantastic.  Before we left the factory we got a chance to go through the gift shop and get plenty of nosh.  The second stop was the Amish farm House.  There we heard about different aspects of Amish history and how they live.  The students asked many great questions.  Next we got a chance to go around the farm connected to the house.  There were so many wonderful animals including goats less than a week old.  The third stop was buggy rides.  We got a tour of the back country and had a great time.  The day concluded with a game of bowling and dinner.  The whole day was a great day of bonding and everyone had a blast.  A special thank you to Rabbi Hecht, Rabbi Harris, Mrs. Seeno and Coach Jo who accompanied us on the trip!
