Greensboro College Will Host Panel Discussion April 26 on Police-Community Relations

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Greensboro College History Club will hold a panel discussion on police-community relations from the civil-rights era to the present at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in 109 Proctor Hall West on campus.

 

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

 

The panelists include:

 

• Capt. Shon F. Barnes, Commander of the Operational Support Division, Greensboro Police Department.

 

• Professor Steve Lechner, Instructor at Wake Technical Community College and a doctoral candidate at N.C. State University who is focusing his studies on the 1969 Gate City Rising.

 

• The Rev. Nelson Johnson, pastor of Faith Community Church and executive director of the Beloved Community Center of Greensboro.

 

• Dr. Deirdre Sommerlad-Rogers, department chair and associate professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Greensboro College.

 

The event is the first in a series to be sponsored by the club, "Current Events with Historical Roots." The history club is advised by Asst. Professor Allison Palmadessa.
