Social Inclusion Launch & Seminar
|
Dublin North West Area Partnership held its social Inclusion Seminar and Launch on Friday March 4th 2016 in the grounds of Na Fianna GAA Club, Mobhi Road, Dublin 9
The seminar was very well attended by a wide variety of local community groups from across the Dublin North West catchment area.
Attendees were welcomed by the DNWAP Local Development Manager Triona O'Sullivan with opening remarks provided by Phil Kearney, a member of the DNWAP Board and Chair of the Social Inclusion Action Appraisal Committee
Social Inclusion Projects that were supported through the Social Inclusion Programme Fund in 2015 presented their work followed by and question and answers.
The seminar was done "Café Style" with attendees moving from one table to another. It was informative and the groups attended were given space to share information about their own organisations and to hear about individual projects. Ideas and tips were shared about and there was a positive vibe throughout the room.
After presentations from 2015 partners the 2016 Social Inclusion Learning Forum was launched and Mary Corridan presented to attendees on the steps involved in joining the Learning Forum for 2016.

DNWAP - First Quarter Stats
|
81 representatives of Local Community Groups received training/information sessions from DNWAP in the first quarter of 2016
4 groups were supported to deliver the Cook IT programme to 33 individual participants
8 groups were supported to participate in the Social Inclusion Learning Forum with 18 new applications to join the forum received
The
Care & Repair team
helped 74 older and vulnerable people with minor home repairs. We also assisted one community and voluntary organisation with a project.
Our LES team met with 129 new clients and supported 52 people to find employment showing continued growth in the jobs market. 72 people progressed into further Training and Education and 10 people progressed to employment programmes to facilitate progression to open labour market participation
And finally our Enterprise Team met
174 new clients, ran

Pre start workshops, 4 Business Women's Networks events and held 2 Start Your Own Business Courses we also supported 97 New Businesses to date

Cook It Programme - Abgail Centre Finglas West
|
What is Cook it?
Cook It is a 6 week nutrition education programme. It offers hands-on practical experience in preparing and cooking of food as well as enhancing an individuals' knowledge of healthy eating and the hygienic handling of food. The Cook It Programme fits within the "Healthy Ireland" framework goals, specifically to increase the number of adults and children with a healthy weight.
The classes are comprised of six sessions, each lasting 3 hours. They are facilitated by a trained tutor and participants get to prepare, cook and eat a healthy meal together.

DNWAP Adult Pre-Employment Programmes
|
A range of Pre-Employment programmes are delivered through the SICAP programme aimed at those most distanced from the labour market and further education opportunities.
The programmes aim to offer foundation skills in areas such at IT and job-seeking as well as exploring areas such as motivation, goal setting and career planning through a series of workshops and guidance supports.
Programmes on offer at present include:

* STEPS programme for TUS participants
* Intensive ESOL classes

New Local Development Manager |
Dublin North West Area Partnership would like to welcome their new staff member Triona O'Sullivan.
Triona has recently joined Dublin North West Area Partnership as Local Development Manager.
Triona holds qualifications in Psychology and Criminology and has many
years experience in the community and voluntary sector with particular expertise in employment, addiction services and child and family services. Triona will be leading a team of Local Development Staff in the implementation of the Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme (SICAP)

The DNWAP would like to say a fond farewell to James Murphy who recently finished with the Care & Repair team. James was a popular member of the team and will be greatly missed. The DNWAP would like to wish James well in his future endavours.

New Education Support Worker
|
Dublin North West Area Partnership is delighted to welcome Therese Fitzgerald who recently joined DNWAP as Education Support Worker. The role involves coordinating initiatives to help address educational disadvantage in the North West Area. Therese will be working with the local schools, education providers and youth services.
Having just moved back from Australia where she had been working in a project that provides opportunities for young people who have disengaged from school or where a mainstream learning environment was inappropriate to meet the young person's needs. "I think that my experience in Australia will add value to my new role as the Education Support Worker"

Volunteers Needed -Better Basics

What's Involved?
The Better Basics Reading Programme is all about working with local primary schools in Finglas/Cabra & Ballymun. The aim of the programme is to improve the reading ability of children.
Volunteer Opportunity
This is an amazing opportunity to use a small piece of your day to help a child reach their full potential and discover the joy of reading. Volunteers help out by working one to one with up to three children for: 15 minutes, twice a week (15 weeks).
Better Reading Volunteers will be trained in the techniques required to work with children to enable them to develop and improve their reading skills. All Volunteers will have ongoing support by our dedicated Coordinator. All volunteers will be Garda Vetted.
Suitable candidates for becoming volunteers include Parents, Grandparents, University Students, Trainee Teachers SNA's and Youth Workers.

Wellbeing in the Workplace
|
Local groups were invited to take time out from their busy schedule to look at ways of caring for themselves and for others in the workplace
This workshop was held Wednesday Feb 17th in DCU and was fully booked. The workshop was facilitated by Faye Conway a qualified counsellor and experienced trainer, workshop facilitator and lecturer. Faye's qualifications include: BA Honours in Psychology, BA in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Professional Certificates in Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Stress and Anger Management.

D7 Parenting Baby Programme
|
A celebration took place on Wednesday 6th April to mark the conclusion of the second successful year of the Dublin 7 Parenting Baby Programme supported by Dublin North West Area Partnership.
A group of 10 mothers and 11 babies successfully completed the programme which comprised 8 weeks of peri-natal yoga and infant massage along with 9 weeks of the Incredible Years Parenting Baby Programme delivered by 2 Public Health Nurses in the Dublin 7 area
T
he Incredible Years Baby programme is evidence based programme which supports parents to help their babies feel loved, safe and secure and encourages baby's physical and cognitive development.
Speaking at the celebration event parents explained why the programme was important to them, highlighting the importance of making connections with other parents, learning from one another and reducing isolation.
Dublin North West Area Partnership wish to thank the project funders Katherine Howard Foundation and the Community Foundation of Ireland along with our delivery partners the Elbowroom and HSE Public Health Nursing for providing such a valuable programme to expectant and new parents in the Dublin 7 area

DNWAP Book Exchange is held on the
1st Thursday of every month from 9am to 1pm
You can take as many books as you can carry and
all are free!
You don't need to bring a book to take a book either ( a question we get asked a lot)
So don't forget to pop in say hello and take a book
