Students march in annual Daffodil Parade

On Saturday April 9, our Puyallup Students will be participating in the 83rd Annual Daffodil Grand Floral Parade. All ten secondary schools and close to 2000 Puyallup School District students will participate in the Puyallup leg of the parade that begins at 12:45 p.m. in downtown Puyallup. Bands, cheer squads, dance teams, ROTC marching units, school daffodil princesses, as well as recognized outstanding educators will all be in the parade representing their own individual schools as well as the school district and community.

We are excited to see what looks to be a favorable weather forecast for our high schools to be able to fully show off their two-year-old band uniforms. Year one with these new uniforms in 2015 was unfortunately a blustery rainy day. On Saturday the three comprehensive high schools, Puyallup High School, Emerald Ridge High School, and Rogers High School will represent Puyallup in all four legs of the parade beginning in Tacoma at 10:00 a.m., Puyallup at 12:45 p.m., Sumner at 2:30 p.m., and Orting at 5:00 p.m.

This is a very long but exciting day for all students involved! We hope to see many in the Puyallup community come out to support our students in this year's parade.

Transportation improvements increase operational efficiencies

The transportation department is working to significantly reduce costs by purchasing more efficient buses and eliminating buses that are fully depreciated. The goal is to generate enough in bus depreciation revenue to make the bus fleet replacement self-sustainable.

The district has purchased 64 buses since 2014. Seven of those were partially funded with grant money received from the Department of Ecology and the Environmental Protection Agency. The remaining 57 were one-time investments from the district's general fund.

According to Chief Financial Officer Corine Pennington, the district receives a return on the investment for new buses:
  • 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency
  • 90 percent reduction in fuel emissions
  • Funding from the state in depreciation revenue for each bus over a period of 9 to 13 years
  • Reduced maintenance costs (parts and labor)
  • State Patrol bus inspections have steadily increased the past  four years to 99.4 percent during the summer of 2015
Asking voters to approve transportation levies are a common strategy for purchasing new school buses in Washington State. "Fiscal responsibility is critically important to our district.  We have been able to plan this fleet sustainability project with existing funds without a transportation levy," said Pennington.

A total of 49 buses with less fuel efficiency have been surplused since 2014. Some of these buses were over 25 years old, well past their depreciation period.
Students featured at Spring Fair

The Washington State Spring Fair, which will be held from April 14-17, promises to be another exciting opportunity to showcase Puyallup School District students' talents and abilities through two special events.

Sponsored by the Puyallup School District's Office of Equity and Achievement, Honoring Cultures will again be held in the south foyer and Pioneer Rooms of the Showplex Exhibition Hall. Artwork, essays, poems, and other student work based on culturally relevant curriculum and projects will be displayed throughout all days of the Spring Fair. Over 500 pieces of student work are on display with many students coming to present and talk about their work. This combined display is a showcase resulting from the district's continuing efforts to honor the cultures of all our students and staff through curriculum, read-alouds, art projects, student presentations, and performances.

The Spring Fair provides the perfect setting for families to come and share in this event. Although the displays will be open to the public on all the days of The Fair, the big day for Puyallup families who want to see the exhibition will be Saturday, April 16  between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Students will discuss their work with visitors to the fair and reflect on their learning regarding diversity and honoring cultures. In 2009 we added performances from district music and dance groups, as well as individual performances on the Showplace stage just south of the Blue Gate entrance. Over 500 students will be performing. These performances are scheduled as follows on Saturday, April 16 th:

Puyallup hosts OSPI Superintendent Candidate Forum

The Puyallup School District is proud to host an evening forum with candidates seeking election as Washington State's next superintendent of public schools. The informational event will be open to the public, and will be held at Aylen Junior High School, 101 - 15th Street NW, Puyallup, 98371 on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Facilitated by Executive Director of Washington Student Achievement Council, Dr. Gene Sharratt, the forum will begin at 6:00 p.m.  Audience members are invited to meet the candidates in person between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Current Superintendent of Schools Randy Dorn has served in the position since 2009. He will be retiring this fall. As a result, Washington will hold an election for superintendent of schools on November 8, 2016. Across the state several forums have been scheduled to allow the public to get to know the candidates better.

Candidates for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) include:
  • Robin Fleming, administrator for health programs, state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Erin Jones, a Tacoma Public Schools administrator
  • State Representative Chris Reykdal (D-22)
  • Larry Seaquist, a U.S. Navy veteran and former Democratic state representative
The Puyallup School District does not endorse or support any particular candidate for this election. The purpose of the forum is to ensure voters are well informed before participating in the fall election. For more information about each candidate visit each of their election website:
