April 7, 2016

With Prom just about a week away, CJ is planning a week full of conversation and discussion about some of the real issues facing teens today. Statistics can be alarming:
  • An AAA survey of teens aged 16 - 19, published in February 2014, found that 41% said it was likely that they or their friends would use drugs or alcohol on prom night.
  • Another AAA survey found 84 percent of teens said their friends would be more likely to get behind the wheel after drinking than to call home for a ride (if they believed they'd get in trouble for using alcohol). Another 22 percent said they'd ride in a car with someone who was impaired instead of calling their parents.
Planned activities for Drug & Alcohol Awareness Week at CJ include:
  • a guest speaker talking with juniors and seniors on Tuesday morning, April 12;
  • curriculum connections to the week's themes in health, English, and religion classes;
  • information and discussion items during all school lunches provided by our guidance counselors;
  • a social media campaign focused on #EaglesHelpingEagles; and
  • to culminate the week, parents are hosting an After Prom event at Marian Lanes in Huber Heights as a safe After Prom activity for students.
Our hope is to support you in the manner in which you talk with your children and their friends about healthy and appropriate choices. This might be another opportunity for you to discuss these issues at home, continuing the conversations we will be starting next week. Other parents have told us that the resources below have helped them approach these topics with their sons and daughters - we hope you might find them useful, too.

Soccer Balls Needed
Contributions Accepted Week of Monday, Apr. 11
Each year 70,000 refugees are admitted to the U.S. from countries where they are fleeing social, political or religious persecution. Last year approximately 225 refugees came to Dayton through Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley - many from African countries, many of them children. While Catholic Social Services provides some donated toys to the children, they do not have an inventory of soccer balls. During the week of April 11, we are seeking donations of used soccer balls. Soccer balls can be dropped off at Chaminade Julienne and directed to Men's Soccer Coach Alex Vandersluijs. Any size ball will be accepted!
