CHINESE BROCCOLI WITH GARLICKY GINGER MISO RECIPE
Servings: 4 Prep Time: 5 Minutes Cook Time: 5 Minutes
If you don't have Chinese broccoli, feel free to use any other greens like asparagus, broccoli, broccolini, broccoli rabe, mustard greens, napa cabbage, bok choy, etc.
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound Chinese broccoli (gai lan)
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 clove garlic
1/2 teaspoon minced fresh hot chile pepper
1 tablespoon miso paste (or 2 tablespoons Miso & Easy)
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon roasted sesame oil
1 teaspoon soy sauce

DIRECTIONS:
1. Trim ends of the Chinese broccoli. Line up the Chinese broccoli with the stems facing same direction. Cut the stalks in half to separate the thick stems from the leaves.
2. Add 1" of water to a wok, pot or large saute pan and bring to a simmer on medium heat. Layer in the broccoli stems at the bottom of the wok and layer the leaves on top of the stems. You want the thick stems closer to the bottom of the pan so that they will cook faster. Steam for 3 minutes. Use tongs to lift the leaves to a serving plate. Check the stems to make sure they are cooked - they should be easily pierced with a fork. Plate the stems when they are done.
3. Discard the remaining water in the wok and wipe dry with a towel. Return wok to the stove and add in the cooking oil and ginger, garlic and chile pepper. Turn the heat to medium-low. Once the oil in the wok begins shimmering, cook for another 15 seconds (take care not to burn the aromatics). Stir in the miso water, soy sauce and sesame oil and cook another 15 seconds. Pour sauce over the Chinese broccoli.

LAUNCH PT-305!
Dear Friend,
The passage of time weighs heavily on PT-305's restoration crew.
Their goal all along has been to have WWII PT-boat veterans aboard PT-305 again on the water, a reunion of a versatile WWII naval weapon and the Greatest Generation warriors who served on her or the likes of her. The ranks of those remaining warriors diminish every day. That's a harsh reality reflected in the display of orange life vests on one wall of the John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion, honoring the crew members who have passed away during the restoration of PT-305 and earlier Museum macro-artifact projects. We owe it to their legacy-and to the remaining PT-boat veterans-to finish this project and get PT-305 back on water. There, she will serve as a unique and engaging teaching tool to share their story with today's generations and generations to come.
PT-305's journey so far has been remarkable. What's ahead for her is up to you. Our Kickstarter campaign has so far raised nearly $200,000 toward moving PT-305 back onto the water and we'd like to pass that mark before month's end.
Your $25 donation today can make that happen. Please support PT-305!
Sincerely,
Gordon H. "Nick" Mueller, PhD

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

An Architect and His City: Henry Howard's New Orleans, 1837-1884
One of the nineteenth century's most prolific architects but also, until recently, one of the most historically elusive, Henry Howard (1818-1884) called New Orleans home for nearly fifty years. During this time, the Irish native established his career, left an indelible mark on the landscape of Louisiana, and witnessed the growth of one of America's greatest cities. An Architect and His City: Henry Howard's New Orleans, 1837-1884, examines the city of New Orleans as experienced by Howard.
When Howard arrived in New Orleans in 1837, the city was the third largest in America and faced an economic crisis and a Yellow Fever epidemic. Over the next several decades, Howard's career was shaded by the events of his city: from the boom of the antebellum years, through the Civil War, to the challenges of Reconstruction and beyond.
A companion to the new book Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect (THNOC and Princeton Architectural Press, 2015),this exhibition will give special consideration to the city's architecture, urban growth, and municipal improvements. Featured items include maps, rare books, and manuscripts as well as historical and contemporary photographs, including images by Robert S. Brantley, the architectural photographer and author of the newly released Howard book.

THIS IS A DINNER YOU CAN'T REFUSE
Hogs for the Cause and the Link Restaurant Group
Present an Italian Wedding Feast inspired by "The Godfather"
at 4th Annual Pre-Hogs Gala Dinner

New Orleans, Louisiana- Hogs for the Cause and the Link Restaurant Group present an Italian Wedding Feast, the 4th annual pre-Hogs gala dinner and kickoff for the two-day fundraising event. The menu,
inspired by the two wedding scenes depicted in The Godfather , will be coordinated by the Link Restaurant Group (Donald Link, Stephen Stryjewski, Ryan Prewitt, Rebecca Wilcomb, Levon Wallace and Billy Jones), with guest chefs Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman (Hog & Hominy, Memphis), Kristen Essig (Meauxbar & Cavan, New Orleans), Carey Bringle (Peg Leg Porker, Nashville) and Tandy Wilson (City House, Nashville). This special dinner is set for Thursday, March 31, 2016 at The Arbor Room at Popp Fountain in City Park, with cocktails beginning at 6PM, followed by dinner at 7:30PM. Music, a silent and live auction, and some surprises will entertain guests throughout the evening. A limited number of tickets to the event are available for $200 each.

"Tracksuits and bad tuxedos are required, slick mustaches are optional, but excessive romantic behavior is encouraged," jokes Rene Louapre. "The gala dinner has become a fun way to showcase both the foods and talents of our region, while supporting a great cause... and who doesn't love a little Godfather every once in awhile." The Sicilian inspired menu will include such foods as antipasti platters, pasta, a meat course with contorni, wines provided by Neat Wines, and of course Italian cookies and a wedding cake. A pre-event Cocktail hour will kick the party off with cocktails featuring Cathead Vodka, Bristow Gin, and Rougaroux Rum created and served by the team from Cure Co. Tickets to the Italian Wedding Feast gala dinner are available for purchase on the Hogs for the Cause website www.hogsforthecause.org

Hogs for the Cause is a 501(c)(3) organization that operates as the premier funding source for pediatric brain cancer outreach services in the United States. It provides help to families who are struggling with the financial burdens of caring for a child with brain cancer.

Arthur Kern: The Surreal World of a Reclusive Sculptor
Arthur Kern is a retired Tulane Professor of Art, who all but withdrew from the outside world thirty years ago. Since then, he has spent much of his time working in his basement studio, creating scores of surreal sculptures that disturb as often as they enchant. Kern's subjects are horses and people, distorted in sometimes fanciful, sometimes macabre ways. His inspiration flows from his unconscious and can therefore be somewhat difficult to fathom, even for Kern himself. Since Kern has never had much interest in exhibiting or selling his sculptures, they have accumulated on shelves and table tops in the uptown house he shares with his wife of sixty years. Arthur Kern includes sixty of Kern's molded polyester sculptures. It is an impressive retrospective and, at the same time, a surprising and stunning debut

Mike Dillon has been called a "punk rock provocateur," "jazz vibraphone visionary" and "percussion virtuoso." Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Brave Combo and Ani DiFranco, collaborations such as Garage A Trois, The Dead Kenny Gs and Critters Buggin, or bands he's fronted, including Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas native has set his own standard for the past 25 years. With his latest effort, Band of Outsiders, Mike Dillon has conjured the perfect storm of all these past endeavors.
"People are always trying to figure out how to describe our music. Maybe we should call it New Orleans punk jazz Brazilian math rock? It's a gumbo of tribal percussion, The Meters, old school hardcore, Brazil, hard bop and anything else that might move us," concludes Dillon. "But you know, I really don't care what you call it. We kick out the jams harder than anyone, and we also know when to heed the lessons of The Minutemen's Double Nickels On The Dime and keep things straight to the point. There's a reason we called the record what we did. We're the living, breathing definition of a band of outsiders, but together we deliver simple majestic beauty."

March 27-  April 3
The Glass Menagerie marked a crucial turning point in American theatre, and forever changed the life of its then unknown author.  Williams' elegiac masterpiece brought a radical new lyricism to Broadway the tragedy, fragility, and tenderness of this "memory play" has made it one of America's most powerful, timeless, and compelling works of theatre. Renowned for its vivid characters, exquisitely written dialogue, and absorbing story, The Glass Menagerie promises to move, to entrance, and to dazzle.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two "mature" cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly's long-suffering TV-producer son Stephen tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly's dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel's, it's a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer!

April. 2, 2016 - The New Orleans Ragtime Festival iscelebrating its first annual offering at the Old US Mint from 11am-4pm and at The Palm Court from 8pm-11pm.

With scheduled performances from some of the best-known and well-seasoned Ragtime performers, we are proud to entertain and educate the world while giving tribute to the music that gave America her voice with our prominent new festival.

The New Orleans Ragtime Festival - 2016 at the Old US Mint will consist of the following performers: Tom McDermott, Ingrid Lucia and Charlie Miller, The Silver Swan Ragtime Quartet, Opera Creole with Wilfred Delphin playing selections from Treemonisha, and The New John Robichaux Society Orchestra to headline.  Just when you think it is over, low and behold, The New Orleans Ragtime Festival finale features Lars Edegran' world-renowned New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra playing a rare club date at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe. What more could anyone ask for?
"We ask that you come out and support The New Orleans Ragtime Festival - 2016, as we have created an engaging experience for this year," says Producer's Patrick Mackey and Tonya Excho. "With many events already lined up for 2017 we will continue to have educational components and plenty of dance and entertainment.  In the meantime we intend to make this year a success!"

There are ragtime enthusiasts all over this country that have been yearning for this kind of an event. We have had requests from concert performers that want to be able to play at our event from Scandinavia, France, England, and Holland. While we are honored with these requests, we are supporting our beloved New Orleans by only hiring local musicians for the first year of this event.  No other city could pull off an endeavor like this.  This is a true, "only in New Orleans" event.
In an effort to make The New Orleans Ragtime Festival accessible to its fans around the world, we are encouraging engagement across Facebook: The New Orleans Ragtime Festival, Instagram: nolaragfest, Twitter:@nolaragfest, and our website: www.theneworleansragtimefestival.com

Women's National Book Association - New Orleans

Announces Call for Entries

For Third Annual "Art of the Book" Competition

NEW ORLEANS - Submissions for the Art of the Book, a local competition in which recycled materials are interpreted into books, are due by 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at IDIYA, a Maker Space studio located at 2723 S. Broad Street in New Orleans.

As part of the competition, artists and craftspeople will translate recycled materials into their interpretations of books to celebrate the beauty and transformative nature of the written word. Entries will include everything from traditional books to decorative and altered shapes and wearable art.

Artists should use at least 50 percent recycled materials, and submissions should be an artistic representation of a book. The five categories that will be judged are:

  1. Traditional: A "classic" book with readable text and turn-able pages.
  2. Art Book: Looks like or represents a book.
  3. Decorative Items: The book has been used as the medium; not necessarily readable. It may be carved, painted, or altered in some way.
  4. Wearable Art: Accessories.
  5. Wearable Art: Clothing.
All submissions become the property of the WNBA New Orleans and will be auctioned to support projects such as literacy initiatives, author discussions, and educational lectures and presentations for writers and those interested in the publishing industry. One-half of the winning bid for each submission will be given to the artist.

Art of the Book submissions will be on view from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at IDIYA. The event also includes a reception and silent auction. Tickets are $10 per person in advance or at the door. IDIYA members may purchase tickets for $5.

2016 NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FESTIVAL POSTER !
House of Swing: Portrait of the First Family of Jazz
Ellis Marsalis' musical dynasty-a father and four sons that swing like no other-inhabits an allegorical house in this brilliant portrait of the first family of jazz that doubles as a loving portrait of the Crescent City's beauty and grace. Graphic master Paul Rogers' companion piece to his classic 2002 Jazz Fest portrait of Wynton Marsalis is a further exploration of his unique "soulful precision" style.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
