HLAA-CS and RED HATTERS

St. Patrick's Day was not only for the 'wearing of the green' but the red and purple as well. HLAA-CS Chapter President, Ann Belfiglio, became an honorary Red Hat Society sister for the day at a Colorado Springs Queens Council hosted by the Delightful Dazzling Divas Chapter (five members of that chapter belong to HLAA-CS).

Red Hat Society motto "Live, Love & Laugh" is tough if you are hard of hearing. Ann's visit was to enlighten the chapter queens about our organization, our mission, and provide them with information about hearing loss. A temporary loop was installed and headsets provided for those without tele-coils. The 50 ladies attending, most of whom were in their 60's-80's, were surprised by Ann's presentation.

There were many comments heard such as, "I didn't know that", "It really makes a difference in my hearing", "I could hear just fine if people didn't mumble" (my favorite), and "No one has ever talked to us about this before." There are not many harder environments in which to hear than 50 women all chattering in one room. The ladies listened so intently to what Ann was saying that you could hear a pin drop! From the old joke, "There's telephone, telegraph, and tell-a-woman", I'd call this meeting a rousing SUCCESS in reaching our community!!

New Game for Our Members

Each month a Loop Logo will be hidden somewhere in the newsletter. It will look like this:

When you find it, send an email with your name and the location of the logo to hlaacoloradosprings@outlook.com. For the remainder of the year we will tally the three earliest responders for each month. At our Christmas party in December, prizes will be awarded to the top three responders for the year.  We hope you will enjoy this little contest.

HLAA conducts two types of webinars:  Educational Webinars, and the new Product/Service Showcase Webinars, which are by companies who wish to present a product or service to people with hearing loss for the purpose of introducing a new product or service and gathering feedback from participants. (Products/Service Showcase webinars are in no way to be construed as an endorsement by HLAA)

All webinars are captioned and will be recorded for playback later (with captions).  Webinars must be viewed on a computer; however, playbacks may be viewed on mobile devices.

Be sure you can access HLAA Webinar platform, Blackboard Collaborate, BEFORE a scheduled webinar. Read the document, Accessing Blackboard Collaborate for instructions.

Successful Management of Hearing Loss Depends on Patient-centered Care

With rapid advances in hearing aids and cochlear implants, the model of care shifted away from patient-centered care to a medical model approach whereby the provider "prescribed devices" and did little else. Patients were viewed as a "hearing loss" rather than as individuals and were alienated from the decision making process. This presentation will focus on how to put the "patient" back at the center of patient centeredness with an emphasis on the empowering the patient to become actively involved in determining the management strategy most consistent with their preferences and values.

IC Fund Update

There will be no IC Funds grants awarded this year due to poor performance of the fund's investments. If next year yields better returns, grant awards will resume.

We continue our outreach efforts with a visit to Academy Christian Church in April. They currently have no assistive devices for persons with hearing loss. Hope to be successful in convincing them to invest in some!

Inclement Weather Policy - In the event of bad weather on the chapter meeting day, an email advising of cancellation will be sent no later than 10 AM.
