James Simons students train for the Bridge Run.
Greetings Friend of Charleston Promise Neighborhood!

March had us lacing up our running shoes! With the support of a grant from the Cooper River Bridge Run Grants Program, CPN partnered with James Simons Elementary School to prepare 25 students to participate in the 10k race. The grant will also provide participating students with new running shoes. Students have been conditioning this past month to be ready for race day on April 2nd!

March has also been a month of cerebral preparation, as students will take the SC Ready and MAP standardized tests next month. Our scholars have been working diligently with their teachers to make sure that they are in top shape to take their tests. We are proud of their hard work, in the classroom, on the track, and beyond!
CPN Social Studies Bowl Announces A New Champion for 2016
The Third Annual Social Studies Bowl was an evening of facts, fun, and excitement for students, parents, teachers, and friends of Charleston Promise Neighborhood. Second through fifth graders from our four Neighborhood schools - Chicora, James Simons, Mary Ford and Sanders-Clyde demonstrated their academic prowess on the evening of March 3rd at the Charleston Museum. The turn-out of family and friends was wonderful and they brought a level of enthusiasm that kept the students charged!

The students were challenged by an array of questions covering history, government, geography, sociology, and more! An awards ceremony concluded the event and this year's winners were the amazingly-talented students from Mary Ford Elementary School and their enthusiastic coach, Ms. Willette Ash!  Thank you to everyone who participated, attended, and helped make the evening special for our students. Special thanks to our judges, volunteers, and to our co-hosts of this event, Historic Charleston Foundation and Charleston Museum.
CPN Middle School Students Participate in White House Initiative
MBK participants learn how to complete a series of STEM-focused projects at SPAWAR.
On March 1st, fourteen Middle School male students from Sanders-Clyde and James Simons participated in the White House-sponsored "My Brother's Keeper" (MBK) event, which is focused on closing the opportunity gaps faced by young men of color.

SPAWAR hosted these young men for a "Day at the Lab," which included hands-on activities, dynamic talks, and lab tours designed to instill passion for STEM, entrepreneurship, and innovation through active learning and genuine STEM experiences. We are grateful that our CPN students had this opportunity to visit SPAWAR and dream about a future career in STEM-related fields!
Family Night at the Aquarium Brought our CPN Schools Together

On the evening of March 16th, CPN families had the opportunity to visit our very own South Carolina Aquarium.  The South Carolina Aquarium graciously opened their doors exclusively for CPN families, offering tours and interactive experiences. Students were excited to pet sting rays, sharks, and even snakes!

Teachers learned how to integrate marine biology facts into their science lessons. While students were excited to learn about the aquatic animals living right in their own backyards. A special thanks to South Carolina Aquarium for your tremendous partnership!
