Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
In the final seconds of the movie, "Antz," the camera zooms increasingly farther out from the final gathering of the ants. In doing so, it quickly reveals that the "world" in which the entire drama of the movie took place is really a small ant hill, next to a garbage can, in a park, which is itself just a small part of a
larger city, which is part of a much larger country and so on.

The message of this scene always struck me. Sometimes we are so focused on a story or an incident that it becomes, in essence, an entire world in itself. It can be difficult to recognize that it may just be a very small part of a much larger picture.

Yesterday, we read the story of Purim in Megillat Esther. Chazal teach us that the story took place during the years between the destruction of the first Beit HaMikdash and the building of the second one. They explain that Achashverosh, under the influence of Haman, had, in fact, prevented the rebuilding the Temple. Beyond that, he mocked the Jews for their desire to rebuild, using the keilim that had been used in the Beit HaMikdash for his parties and having his guests and entertainers dress up like kohanim

Chazal explain that when Achashverosh told Esther that he would give her anything she requested, up to half of his kingdom, he meant that he would give her anything she asked, except for permission to rebuild the Beit HaMikdash. Why? Because the ten miracles that happened every day in the Temple would be proof that Hashem rules the world and therefore a direct threat to Acheshverosh's power.

Now, like the camera at the end of the movie, let's take a step back. Darius II was the younger son of Acheshverosh - his son with Esther. It is Darius II who becomes king after his father and who later rebuilds the Beit HaMikdash in Jerusalem. So the drama of the Purim story is really a piece of a much larger narrative that eventually leads to the building of the Temple. Often, we don't get to see this larger perspective but sometimes, as in the story of Purim, Hashem gives us this great gift and we can glimpse how many of our own stories and dramas fit into His much larger picture and plan.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Shushan Purim: Costume and Carnival Day!
BPY students and staff alike had a blast celebrating Shushan Purim with Costume and Carnival Day!  There were so many great costumes on display, amazing carnivals for early childhood and elementary school students, ruach-filled dancing, a costume parade, and more! What a great day!

BPY Family Megillah Reading
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday morning for our annual BPY family megillah reading, which included a very special BPY first (mazal tov Kagedan family!) - a baby naming ! After the megillah, Rav Ronen and the administrative team distributed hundreds of mishloach manot to all the children. A tremendous thank you and chazak u'baruch to Shmuel Popper who read the megillah so beautifully for us. What a special way to celebrate the chag together as a school community!

Junior High Shushan's Got Talent!
Junior high students had a lot of fun as they exhibited a wide range of impressive "talents" and answered trivia questions in BPY's own version of "Shushan's Got Talent!"

Fifth Grade Megillah Reading
BPY fifth graders read the entire megillah this week and they did an absolutely INCREDIBLE job! Each student read his or her pesukim with the taamim of his or her family's tradition: Sephardic or Ashkenazic. We are sure this experience is something they will remember for the rest of their lives. Kol hakavod and chazak u'baruch to Rav Haim and to all of our fifth graders!!!

The entire reading was livestreamed for parents and relatives. In case you missed it, you can view the unedited recording here:
Third Grade Purim Plays
Third graders put on some wonderful Purim plays, complete with sets, props, costumes, music, and choreographed dances. They performed for other students and made the story of Purim come alive, all in Hebrew of course! Kol hakavod to Morah Avital, Morah Hani, Morah Keren, Morah Megan and all of our third graders!

Tefillat Esther Jewish Unity Event
On Taanit Esther, seventh and eighth grade students participated in Tefillat Esther - A Jewish Unity Event at the Kotel. They joined thousands of other students via Skype to learn and say tehillim in memory of victims of terror in Israel. The program concluded with a moving rendition of "Acheinu Kol Beit Yisrael" led by Chaim Dovid, live from Israel.

BPYPTO Mishloach Manot
On Wednesday, the BPYPTO sent each BPY student and staff member home with his or her very own mishoach manot full of healthier treats, all packed in a beautiful BPY keepsake metal lunchbox. Thank you to the BPYPTO for organizing this special project and to everyone who participated by sending mishloach manot to BPY friends through the BPYPTO!

#bpynachat From Our Inbox
From a BPY parent...

"We had a tour scheduled for 9am this morning, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to bring [my son] to his classroom and then [join the junior high for] Shacharit....Out of character for my son, he began to cry at the door to the classroom as he didn't want me to leave...[His morah] quickly noticed and magically helped
him transition...She is a gifted teacher and has a wonderful manner with the kids.

Shacharit was inspiring. The students prayed with a seriousness and maturity my 'grown ups' would do well to emulate. There was no talking at all. I couldn't believe it! Rav Eli and Rav Ariel brought great ruach to the tefilah and the girls led a beautiful Mi Sheberach for Tzahal. The moment Shacharit was over, every child helped clear up the room, putting away siddurim, folding the chairs and stacking them neatly without having to be asked - it was very impressive.

Finally, Morah Jessica and Ruth led us on a tour for an hour-and-a-half of the entire school. Each class was more impressive than the next. The students seemed attentive, the teachers engaging and it was clear to us that every detail of the curriculum and the students' experience in the school has been thought through so carefully. It was remarkable to see how much Morah Jessica knows about what is going on with every teacher in every classroom in the school. We feel blessed that [our son] is under the supervision of such a phenomenal educator and administrator.

In short, BPY is a brilliant school. May Hashem bless you to continue leading it with such success for many years to come.
This Week In BPY's Science Discovery Room...
First grade entomologists embarked on an in-depth study of Bess Beetles (AKA Passalidae) as part of their organism study! Last week they went to the woods to collect "dead, damp wood," which they read that the beetles eat. When the beetles arrived, the children set up their habitats and learned to handle them carefully. Then they drew detailed diagrams of the beetles and shared their observations and questions. Just another part of our incredible hands-on science program!

Fifth graders continued their study of circuitry. They learned how to draw circuit diagrams and are testing how different factors affect the brightness of light bulbs. Next, they will build their own alarms to solve a problem based on a story they read.

BPY Alumni Pride
