MESSAGE FROM LEW BLEIWEIS, A.A.E., EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Our community's airport has been in the news a lot in the last month. We announced that 2015 was a record year of passenger growth, which is great news for our region. Also, Allegiant (the ultra low-cost airline at AVL) announced two new summer routes from AVL - non-stop to Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport begins May 19, and non-stop to Jacksonville International Airport begins the following week. We are growing, and I want to personally say that I appreciate our region's commitment to check AVL first for your air travel needs.

When you use your local airport, you support the airlines who have chosen to invest in our community to provide needed air service. The air service they provide creates convenience and great connectivity right here at home, as well as positive economic impact in western North Carolina. Take a look at the article below about "leakage" to learn more.

And as you make travel plans for the summer, I encourage you to think about a long weekend getaway, or your week-long vacation to one of the new non-stop destinations. So what will it be? A national monuments tour in D.C., or lounging on the beach in Jacksonville?

WHAT IS LEAKAGE
(IT'S AN AIR SERVICE DEVELOPMENT TERM. WE THOUGHT WE'D HELP EDUCATE YOU ABOUT WHY IT'S IMPORTANT.)
Let's talk leakage. Surely everyone is familiar with leaks of some kind. We've all had a leaky faucet or a flat tire. Leakage, as most know it, is something escaping from where it should be confined. Whether the thought of a leak makes you think of water, air, or something else, the general concept is likely the same. In the airport world, leakage is what occurs when passengers from one airport's core market drive to another airport to catch a flight.

In the vast majority of leakage situations, passengers from smaller cities drive to larger cities to fly. This can happen for many reasons. Some drive to the larger airport to catch a nonstop flight, as opposed to a connecting flight from their hometown. Others may hit the road as the result of a lowe r fare to their final destination. Ironically, many people who drive hours to save money on their fare may or may not save any money at all after adding up the value of time spent, gas, and other expenses associated with traveling to a farther away airport.
NEW PARKING GARAGE
COMING SOON
As part of the airport's master plan, the construction of a parking garage was planned to meet projected growth and passenger needs in the future.  The "future" has arrived, and with two years of record growth and more on the horizon, the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority Board approved the design and construction of a new parking garage.

The design, created by Gresham Smith and Partners was approved by the GARAA board, and construction is projected to begin by late summer or early fall of this year and be completed within approximately one year.

The garage will have 1,300 spaces (for use by customers and the rental car companies), and once complete, the airport will net approximately 800 new customer spaces.  The increased parking capacity should serve the needs of the airport well into the future.

The garage will be located directly in front of the terminal (where a portion of our existing parking is located now).  The rendering shown here gives an idea of the location (near the existing toll booth) and aesthetics planned.
