Summer like conditions at Hargrave!
Hargrave Parent eNewsletter
"Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which an individual
(or leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader
or shared by the leader and his or her followers. "
-- John W. Gardner
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

We have arrived at Spring Break! While it is a break for everyone at Hargrave, it means two different things to two different groups of people. For our Cadets, it is a time to return home, see friends, be with family and decompress. For Hargrave's faculty and staff, it is more like taking a deep breath before plunging into the busy end of the Second Semester.

Immediately after we return, Hargrave's annual Junior Retreat will take place April 8-9, 2016. The Retreat is a fun packed weekend for the Juniors to help them bond as a class and prepare their way as leaders for the next school year. It is a required event for all members of the Junior Class. The 2016 Retreat begins on campus Friday afternoon with a special dinner, movie and games. On Saturday morning, the juniors head to Camp Pitt for a fun day of activities, which includes paintball, canoe racing, basketball, corn hole and team building exercises. A steak dinner follows that evening. The juniors will spend the night at Camp Pitt and return to campus on Sunday. All juniors, boarding and day, are required to attend. We will be having your son's advisor, TAC and coach pen letters to your son. If you would like to send an encouraging letter to your son for him to open on Saturday night during the Retreat. This is a big deal, and your love and encouragement are greatly appreciated. Send your letter to: Junior Retreat Letter, c/o Coach Ben Paris, 200 Military Drive, Chatham, VA 24531. Thanks for your support. If history is a guide (it usually is) then we are in for a great weekend!

Before we get too busy, now is a great time to re-enroll for the 2016-2017 Academic year. We have already had a number of families re-enroll, lock in their current tuition rates and process their financial aid packets! Current Cadets can maintain their current tuition rate with Hargrave's Tuition for Life program. You can find your re-enrollment contract in your MyBackPack account. If you have any questions, please reach out to your admissions counselor ASAP!

Tuition for Life means your Cadet keeps his 2015-2016 tuition rate (or earlier) for the duration of his Hargrave career as long as he attends continuously and the enrollment deposit is paid by May 10th of each year. Cadets are automatically enrolled in this program if the enrollment deposit is provided by the deadline. This unique program is designed to keep your budget stable and costs down.

Each year, the Ray M. Harris Scholarship is a scholarship given to students whose home is within the Pittsylvania County, Virginia area. Details about the scholarship and how to apply are in the section below.

Upon return, Hargrave will be busy every weekday and weekend. The EOT has joined a crowded schedule that includes the Junior and Sophomore Retreats, Homecoming 2016, Spring 2016 Distinguished Speaker, Mother's Day, an ACT test, exams and all the Senior Class end of year events. Additionally, the Cadets will continue to juggle their academics, sports and other activities. This will be a blur once Spring Break concludes, so please keep up with your calendars and this Parent eNewsletter.

Be both happy and safe during Spring Break. Enjoy this time with your son. A great finish to the 2015-2016 Academic year is just ahead!

The Hargrave varsity baseball team is taking a team trip for their Spring Break. They will represent Hargrave in the 2016 Louisville Slugger Select Classic Perfect Game Tournament at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, Georgia. The tournament will run March 24-26. On the the first day of the tournament, they'll play a double header. At 1:00 p.m., they take on the Ralston Valley Mustangs. At 4:00 p.m., they are up against the Enterprise Wildcats. I wish them luck in their Spring Break endeavor.

Best regards,

Don Broome

Dante's Inferno Conference
Pugh

Pugh
Pugh
On Saturday, March 19, 2016, Mrs. Deb Pugh of Hargrave's English Department attended a University of Virginia (UVA) and National Endowment for the Humanities sponsored professional conference on Dante's 'Inferno.' The one day seminar was based on a three week seminar held at UVA last summer. The program included background on the poem, aids to deepen student's understanding of the poem, as well as a "demonstration of how to teach students about Dante's 'Inferno' and interactive presentations from three U.S. high school teachers who have written and field-tested related classroom lessons."

Each year Mrs. Pugh teaches the 'Inferno' to seniors in her English 12 class. The conference has aided her by providing new instructional ideas and inspiration for teaching the material.

IGTH

When it come to deciding on your gift to Hargrave, please know that those $10, $25, $50 and $100 gifts do add up and do help a tremendous amount!

Why Give?
The boarding school landscape has changed a lot over the past 10 plus years. There are more and more smaller academies that have been started which means it's a much more competitive market.

With that being said, IGTH allows Hargrave to hire and keep the best faculty, staff and coaches. Your support is needed more than ever!

Our goal is to raise participation in all constituencies within the Hargrave family, ultimately reaching 1,000 donors for the Academy's fiscal year ending May 31. That will be a 100% increase from the year before but less than our all time high of 1,600 donors. To make a gift you can go to the link below.
