CHIA President's Message
Opportunity to Engage: MyHealthID Advocacy Initiative
|
Message from CHIA President Deborah Collier, RHIA
What is advocacy? Advocacy is the pursuit of influencing outcomes or the active support of a cause. Advocacy is used to enact or defeat legislation or to change regulation (AHIMA State Advocacy Toolkit).
MyHealthID is the next advocacy campaign initiative led by AHIMA. The campaign was launched March 20, 2016 and is in effect until April 19, 2016. The goal is to get 100,000+ signatures on a petition for Congress to address and discuss the concerns that a unique patient identifier is needed for patient safety. A state advocacy leader is recommended by AHIMA to help facilitate the advocacy efforts and obtain the signatures. Maria Hewett, MBA, RHIA will serve as leader for the MyHealthID advocacy efforts for CHIA. Maria is very knowledgeable about data integrity and patient identifier (ID) management related to her work as MPI Integrity Coordinator for the San Diego Health Information Exchange. Maria's enthusiasm, passion for the profession, and experience regarding patient ID will be valuable for leading the MyHealthID advocacy efforts for California (CA).
The ICD-10 advocacy campaign was a success with raising the urgency and awareness to implement ICD-10 without further delay. The MyHealthID campaign is another opportunity for successful advocacy with membership engagement to influence and increase our visibility in the healthcare community. All support for the MyHealthID advocacy initiative is valuable as Maria reaches out to all members for assistance. Please join the CHIA Board of Directors in supporting this effort.

OCR Launches Phase 2 of HIPAA Audit Program
|
As a part of its continued efforts to assess compliance with the HIPAA Privacy, Security and Breach Notification Rules, the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has begun its next phase of audits of covered entities and their business associates. Audits are an important compliance tool for OCR that supplements OCR's other enforcement tools, such as complaint investigations and compliance reviews. These tools enable OCR to identify best practices and proactively uncover and address risks and vulnerabilities to protected health information (PHI).
In its 2016 Phase 2 HIPAA Audit Program, OCR will review the policies and procedures adopted and employed by covered entities and their business associates to meet selected standards and implementation specifications of the Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules. These audits will primarily be desk audits, although some on-site audits will be conducted. Learn more now. |
