HANC
Middle School
BOYS MISHMAR

On Thursday, March 3rd, the seventh and eighth grade boys had the opportunity to learn after school with Rabbi Harris. The learning, Pirkai Avos, was amazing. Plus, the chulent, kugel and poppers were great to go along with the learning. Thanks again to Rabbi Harris for this extraordinary event! We look forward to the next one on March 31.

Long Island Science and Engineering Fair

This year HANC Middle School participated in LISEF (Long Island Science and Engineering Fair). LISEF is part of the INTEL International Science and Engineering fair.  Each student presents their science experiment to three judges.  The top 20 projects are nominated to apply to compete in the National Science Fair.

Over the past few months ten HANC students, Rebecca Cohen, Tiferet Weissman, Max Aaron, Eyal Laurence, Adam Speiser, Josh Brafman, Rafi Silbiger, Eli Appel, Jacob Hecht, and Elan Moskowitz, performed eight extraordinary experiments that they and their group designed. The experiments that they presented included Caffeinated Plants, Extending the Life of a Battery, Pick-up -truck Efficiency, Cognitive Gazing, The Blame Game, Materials that Withstand stabbing, and Improving Insecticides.  They presented their experiments at the LISEF science fair at Crest Hollow Country Club.

LISEF was an amazing experience that taught us a lot.  We learned how to research and design an experiment, how to perform an experiment and how to present an experiment.  It helped us develop skills that can be used in science and math professions.  LISEF is also very mentally challenging and fun.

Congratulations to Elan Moskowitz for winning second place (Improving Insecticides) and being nominated to apply to the National Science Fair.

Thank you to Ms. McDougal and Josh Vilkas for mentoring us with our experiments.  Thank you to Rabbi Hecht and Mrs. Schneider for giving us the opportunity to go to LISEF .

Middle School Celebrates Purim
at the E.C.C.

On March 2, the Middle School Jewish Affairs Committee went to the ECC to celebrate Purim and Dr. Seuss' birthday. We began by preparing delightful shalach manot bags for the children. Then, we made entertaining posters with much color and creativity. Finally, the day arrived; all of us came in wearing various costumes for the children at the ECC. Once we arrived, each group of two or three was assigned two classes to read one Dr. Seuss book and one Purim book. When we entered each classroom the children had bright smiles on their faces. They were all full of joy and excitement to hear all the stories we had to tell. The students were very active while the story was being told. They were quick to answer all the questions and shared about what they were learning in school. It was a very enjoyable and a memorable experience for all. We are very appreciative to have had this amazing experience. We can't wait to go back next year!

Thank you Shayna Greenstein, Rebecca Tavakoli, Adam Speiser, Avital Mahgerefteh, Daniella Shahravan, Kayla Stern, Olivia Peller, Kayla Sadigh, Ali Lenefsky, Kyra Richman, Orah Massihshesraelian and Aaron Afrahim.

PURIM CHAGIGOT

This year in honor of there being 2 Adars we had 2 chagigot.  The first chagigah was a techno chagigah put together by the high school student senate under the direction of Rabbi Mezei, Director of Student Life.  There was Ms. Pacman, and air hockey and all kinds of other games.  The room was set up with special lighting.  There was a photo booth which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  Students enjoyed pretzels and popcorn.  Thank you to Gary Wallin and his team for all of the attractions.   In honor of Adar Bet, we had chagigot with Azamra DJ.  The students enjoyed the ruach, spending time with morot and Rebbeim, the costumes, and of course hamantaschen.  Thank you to Azamra DJ.

8th Grade girls' kumzitz/tisch

On Friday, March 11, the 8th  grade girls had an amazing surprise! We started our normal chumash class all together and went over homework. Then it was time for the surprise. We were having a kumzitz in honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar! All of us sat in a huge circle on the floor after rearranging the room filled with desks. We sang z'mirot with so much passion, watched a video about how timing is everything and there are opportunities all around us, heard a great story from Morah Klein, and to end off the period we had delicious chulent! It was such a special treat and another great way to have enjoyable Torah learning in our illustrious Yeshiva. Thanks Morah Klein for the amazing experience!

SPELLING BEE

"Number forty-two, Rena Max from Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Middle School!" I smiled as I stepped onstage. After a stressful written round and an onstage round that seemed to take forever, here I was. This was my third year making it to the finals in the Hofstra Long Island Regional  Spelling  Bee, but that didn't make  it any less thrilling. From this point on was a traditional spelldown- my favorite part.
For all of you word lovers out there, here's a list of all the words I spelled onstage in the whole  spelling bee:

Antibiotic
Piazza
Foggara {Guess what? Even Spellcheck doesn't know this one!}
Raconteur
Furlough
Braggadocio
Desecration
Keplerian {Or this one.}
And then there's the word I got stuck on- viscid. (It means sticky- get it?) I spelled it V-I-C-I-D and ended up in 5th place. Everybody makes mistakes, right? I'm just proud of how far I've come.
