First-Ever MATCH DAY a Huge Success!
Friends Guru Shan and Dan Lefler, CMSRU Class of 2016, share a milestone and huge smiles.

Marci Fornari, CMSRU Class of 2016, prepares
to announce her Match placement.
Tears of joy, applause, hoots and hollers, huge smiles, and countless hugs abounded as CMSRU's Charter Class celebrated a successful Match Day on Friday, March 18. Members of the Class of 2016 learned of their residency placements at the same time as their counterparts at medical schools throughout the country: at 12:00 pm Eastern time.

We are proud to report that CMSRU's Class of 2016 matched at a wide range of nationally esteemed programs including DuPont Children's Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, UCLA, and Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University. Local matches included Temple University, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and - of course - Cooper University Hospital!

"Match Day is the culmination of many years of hard work," explains Paul Katz, MD, Dean of CMSRU. "As a new medical school we are especially pleased to see the caliber of the institutions where our graduates will begin the next phase of their education. Given the intense competition for residency spots nationally, their results are extraordinary!"

Holly Caten and Brittany Scarpato share a hug and tears of joy; both students matched at the prestigious Boston University Medical Center. Caten will study otolaryngology, and Scarpato will study internal medicine.

Match Day was the culmination of an exciting week for CMSRU's soon-to-be MDs. Throughout the week there were various social, academic, service, and celebratory events. At one lunch-and-learn session, students received "Intern Survival Tips;" students also dined with their Advisory Colleges and had their last-ever Basic Sciences and Clinical Medicine Lectures with beloved professors William Kocher, MD and Anat Feingold, MD, respectively. Each member of the Class of 2016 displayed and presented their Capstone projects throughout the week, as well.

Future CMSRU Alumni take a break from a bowling event during Match Week to gather around a banner that has popped up at many events for the past several years!

One of the biggest highlights of Match Week was the service project that took place on Wednesday, as our fourth-year medical students partnered with a local organization called Heart of Camden to help rehab homes in Camden. These future doctors are not only good with stethescopes - they are fluent with paintbrushes and hammers as well!

Medical students making a difference in Camden.

CMSRU faculty and staff send our most sincere congratulations to the Charter Class on this very happy occasion, and remind each of them that no matter where their lives take them, they will always have a home and family here at CMSRU. We can't wait to cheer for them as their careers unfold!
CMSRU Congratulates Annette Reboli, MD
The New Jersey Hospital Association recently presented Annette C. Reboli, MD, founding vice dean of CMSRU and attending physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Cooper University Health Care, with its 2016 Healthcare Professional of the Year Award.

Dr. Reboli was honored for her clinical and leadership skills, which have had a significant impact on patient care throughout the health system and in the success of New Jersey's newest medical school.

As one of its founding physicians, Dr. Reboli has provided leadership, scholarship, and vision to help CMSRU develop into a medical school of national prominence since it opened in 2012. "Pediatrics Row" Grows and Sidney Sussman is Celebrated

In late January, members of the CMSRU Pediatrics faculty came together to honor their former long-time department chair Sidney J. Sussman, MD. They were joined by  Dr. Sussman and his family, and several CMSRU medical students who are interested in pursuing a pediatrics specialty.

Dean Paul Katz, MD, spoke about Dr. Sussman's role as one of the early visionaries without whom CMSRU would not exist. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues throughout pediatrics, Ernest Post, MD, praised Dr. Sussman's leadership and mentorship.

#RowanGIVES Day a Huge Success: Thank You!

Our thanks to everyone who took part in  #RowanGIVES Day on March 3! Y our efforts put CMSRU's Street Medicine group in the top spot of 30+ designations across Rowan.  As record-breaking numbers of gifts came in, challenge funds were "unlocked" and Street Medicine received an additional $3,250!

Street Medicine facilitates the health of people living on the streets in Camden. This team of dedicated med students visits homeless encampments, distributing supplies and providing basic medical help, including wound care and OTC medicine. Most importantly, our students listen to and learn from this often-overlooked group of people, bringing friendship and compassion.

CMSRU Excellence in Teaching Awards Presented

Conceived to recognize teaching that exemplifies the CMSRU ideals of professionalism, mentorship, and life-long learning, the CMSRU Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented annually to two educators who inspire their students and embody both the humanistic and scientific qualities of medicine. The recipients encourage students to live up to their potential, to push boundaries, and to find joy in the pursuit of their medical education.

First- and second-year students select the Basic Science Faculty awardee, and third- and fourth-year students select the Clinical Faculty awardee. The selection process is managed by the CMSRU Student Government Association (SGA) and the Organizational Student Representatives (OSR) who serve as the CMSRU student liaisons to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

We congratulate the 2016 recipients of the CMSRU Excellence in Teaching Awards:

William Kocher, MD - Basic Science Faculty
Brian Gable, MD - Clinical Faculty
The Lefler Family's Legacy
at CMSRU

Haddonfield resident Dan Lefler will soon be Daniel S. Lefler, MD, and his family couldn't be more proud. One of the ways that his parents, Don and Cindy Lefler, show their pride is by supporting CMSRU in any way they can. They joined the  2012 Legacy Society a few years ago, and participated in our  Take a Seat Campaign, where they memorialized Mrs. Lefler's father on an auditorium chair plaque.

The Leflers stopped by for a visit recently to see the plaque in Dan's grandfather's memory, and they brought along something special: an antique pill roller. The fascinating, wooden machine once belonged to Ms. Judy Schwartz, RPh, Dan's great-aunt, who was a leader in the healthcare industry at a time when there weren't very many females in the field. Ms. Schwartz attended pharmacy school on a full scholarship and graduated in only 3 years. She used the pill roller (pictured above) for many years throughout her career.

The pill roller, on permanent loan to CMSRU from the Leflers, will be displayed with other antique medical equipment at the school.
