UPS TO BUILD ALTERNATIVE
FUEL SITE IN TIFTON

UPS has announced that Tifton will be the site of one of 12  new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations the package delivery company is building around the nation.

United Parcel Service Inc. is spending more than $100 million to build an additional dozen CNG fueling stations and add 380 new CNG tractors to its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet in an effort to "diversify its fuel sources and reduce its environmental impact."

The 12 new CNG stations will be built by TruStar Energy in Tifton; Amarillo, Texas; Chattanooga, Tenn.;

Columbia, S.C.; El Paso, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; Kansas City, Kan.; Phoenix; Reno, Nev.; San Antonio; Trinidad, Colo.; and Willow Grove, Pa

The new CNG tractors to be deployed in these cities will be manufactured by Kenworth, and Agility and Quantum Fuel Systems will provide the CNG storage systems.

CNG is made by compressing natural gas to less than 1 percent of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. The use of natural gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions six to 11 percent, UPS reported, citing the  U.S. Department of Energy.

"At UPS, we own our fleet and our infrastructure. That allows us to invest for the long term, rather than planning around near-term fluctuations in fuel pricing," says Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability.

"CNG is part of a broad investment in a variety of alternative fuel vehicles. Taken together, all of our alternative fuel vehicles represent 6 percent of the more than 100,000 UPS global fleet and have driven a  10 percent annual reduction in use of conventional fuel," Wallace said.

UPS is working to meet its goal of logging 1 billion miles with its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet by the end of 2017, using a Rolling Laboratory approach to determine the right alternative fuel solutions to meet the needs of route-specific driving environments.

UPS operates one of the largest private alternative fuel fleets in the U.S. with more than 6,840 all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, CNG, LNG, propane and lightweight fuel-saving composite body vehicles.

State Rep. Clay Pirkle, R-Ashburn, presented a Ga. House resolution commending Hester for his role in discovering the robbery suspect at the motel in February and then talking him into surrendering without shots being fired.

Pirkle said we need to recognize law enforcement officers for the good they do in our communities.  Hester said he doesn't feel like he did anything special and was merely doing his job.

On Feb. 10, Sheriff Hester had  spotted a vehicle in the Best Western parking lot that  matched a  lookout alert issued after a robbery that morning in  Union, S.C. He called for reinforcements and then convinced the suspect to come out.

Authorities say they confiscated much of the money that the man is accused of stealing.
