EYPC Newsletter March 2016
"It takes a village to raise a child"
EYPC is committed to the village.
Empowering Youth for Positive Change is excited to start our Monthly Newsletters! In each newsletter we will mention events and changes in our organization, as well as upcoming events and notifications that we feel our staff, clients and community should be aware of. We are happy and eager to keep you updated with all the wonderful things we are doing here at EYPC and EYPC Mentoring Group.

New Program: Outpatient Therapy
EYPC's Virginia Offices have now started the new Outpatient Program! Outpatient Therapy is counseling for children and families in need of support, advice and/or resources. It is less intensive than In-Home counseling and is a step down program for children who have already finished another program. This program  takes place in the therapist's office.

Introducing the Parents Assisting Parents Group! (PAP)
PAPs is a group open to all parents that focuses on the support and guidance from one parent to another. The group’s main goal is to provide one another with the tools, encouragement, support, and guidance to be successful in their parenting endeavors.  PAPs assists each other with the specific skill-building techniques needed to assist with managing the everyday struggles that often come along with parenting. PAPs meet weekly to assist one another with sharing and identifying one’s own strengths, experiences, resources, and limitations regarding parenting and building on one another in order to become a more effective parent.  Each group is facilitated by a trained clinician to provide education regarding mental and physical health diagnoses, effective communicate techniques, conflict resolution skills, behavior modification techniques, and so on. PAPs prides itself in being confidential, anonymous, and non-judgmental; with one goal in mind- to promote positive and loving parents.

Clinicians Corner:
Mr. JR  Fondren
Mr. Fondren would like to remind you about Self Care.

Self care includes all health decisions people (as individuals or consumers) make for themselves and their families to ensure they are physically and mentally fit. Self care includes exercising to maintain physical fitness and promote good mental health, as well as eating well, practicing good hygiene and avoiding health hazards such as smoking and drinking to prevent ill health.

And a brief reminder of the symptoms of ODD:

Oppositional Defiance Disorder Symptoms

Includes at least four symptoms from any of these categories: angry and irritable mood;  argumentative and defiant behavior; or vindictiveness. Occurs with at least one individual who is not a sibling. Causes significant problems at work, school or home. Occurs on its own, rather than as part of the course of another mental health problem, such as a substance use disorder, depression or bipolar disorder. Lasts at least six months

I Vote For Me is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization based in the state of Virginia with cumulative experience in the fields of education, mental health, medicine, criminal justice and community collaboration.

IVFM will kick off our College Prep Not Prison Prep Campaign on March 29, 2016 at Virginia State University with the documentary viewing of Elementary Genocide.  We will also have a viewing of the same film on March 30, 2016 on the campus on Virginia Union University.  This campaign will educate the community about the School to Prison Pipeline, encourage VA school districts to impose a moratorium on out of school suspensions for grades pre k-5 and utilize positive behavioral interventions and restorative practices for conflict resolution.  We are calling all community groups and organizations to stand with us as we energize our communities to end the school to prison pipeline.
