IN MEMORIAM
WILLIAM "BILL" A.S. AKANA

On March 13, 2016, the All Saints' 'Ohana lost a beloved friend and faithful servant of God, Bill Akana.

Bill was born January 3, 1924 in Kilauea and was baptized March 19, 1924 by the Reverend Marcos Carver--only months before the founding of All Saints' as a mission of the Episcopal Church. Bill was the owner of  Akana Insurance Agency, Inc. and former manager of First Insurance Co. As a member of the Church for nine decades, Bill served in countless roles and leadership positions including multiple stints as Senior Warden. He was instrumental in securing the funds to build the Sloggett Center.

Bill is survived by Marge Akana, their son, Scott Akana, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Bill's life will be held Thursday, March 31 at All Saints; 9:00AM visitation and 10:00AM service. Bill will be missed by all! A hui hou kakou.

There is a wonderful article written by Pamela Varma Brown about many of Bill's "adventures." To view the article, click here.

Bring Canned Food

On Thursday, March 24, All Saints' and St. Michael's gather at St. Michael's and All Angels at 7:00PM for an Agape Quiet Meal followed by the Maundy Thursday liturgy with foot-washing beginning at 7:30PM.

Maundy Thursday's offering will go to support the cornerstone outreach ministries of both congregations; All Saints' Laundry Love and St. Michael's Loaves and Fishes.

Additionally, the All Saints' 'Ohana are encouraged to bring canned food items for Loaves and Fishes.
PALM CROSSES
A Labor of Love

On Saturday, March 19, a hardy group of volunteers patiently labored to make over 400 palm crosses to be handed out during the Palm Sunday Service.

Christians take their palm crosses from the Palm Sunday Service and place them for a year in a prominent location (i.e. home, car, work) as a reminder of Jesus' journey to and into Jerusalem, which also serves as a reminder of Christ's presence in our own spiritual journeys. Each year for Ash Wednesday, the ashes are made from from the previous Palm Sunday services.
FROM THE BISHOPS OF THE CHURCH
Episcopal Bishops Issue
A Word to the Church

The House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church, meeting in retreat, unanimously approved the following Word To The Church.

Holy Week 2016

"We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others."

On Good Friday the ruling political forces of the day tortured and executed an innocent man. They sacrificed the weak and the blameless to protect their own status and power. On the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, revealing not only their injustice but also unmasking the lie that might makes right.

In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season's political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. They seek to secure their own safety and security at the expense of others. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us.

In this moment, we resemble God's children wandering in the wilderness. We, like they, are struggling to find our way. They turned from following God and worshiped a golden calf constructed from their own wealth. The current rhetoric is leading us to construct a modern false idol out of power and privilege. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else.

We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.

The Episcopal Church House of Bishops met in retreat March 11 - 15 at Camp Allen Conference Center in Navasota, TX.

2016 Sanctuary Art Installation Project
We are asking individuals and/or families (of all ages!) to design and make a cross representing a living/thriving cross. The crosses will be hung in the same location as the previous "beautiful" photographic images. Any materials may be used. The dimensions should not be larger than 16" x 20".  Those who are interested or have questions, please contact either  Mary Margaret Smith  by phone at  821-2878 or by email or  Chris Wataya  at 822-4267 or by email.
