SAD NEWS REGARDING WINSTON-SALEM MAGICIAN TONY ECON

Past International President and Ring #199 member Mike Gorman received this email today from Don Voltz. Since Tony lived in Winston Salem and lectured here at Ring 199, he thought it appropriate to share this information with his magic friends here:

"I wanted to share some news with you about our mutual friend Tony Econ. He went in the hospital last week Thursday for an elective cardiac stent. Thursday night, he became unresponsive and it was discovered he had a major stroke. He remained in critical condition, underwent surgery to remove blood that had accumulated around his brain and this morning passed away. I have been in close contact with his wife Joan and her family. After the initial event, Joan asked me to contact Tony's friends in magic which I have been doing over the weekend. I am sorry that I have just received your email information and Gary Freed asked that I update you on what happened.

Tony Econ, an award winning ballroom dancer and accomplished slight of hand magician has touched many people during the course of his life. He has fooled numerous people with his wit and presentational style, his incredibly optimistic view on the world and his world class slight of hand. He has been the inspiration to many magicians and is always willing to share a secret, provide inspiring words or to educate sophisticated gamblers or magicians in ways to advance their performance and hone their technique."

Don Voltz has set up a fund raising site for Tony's family, Mike invites you to share this link and the story about what happened.

JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL

This remarkable novel written by Susanna Clark captures the world of 19th Century England and its fascination with magic. This riveting story has sold over a million copies and has inspired an 7-part BBC miniseries that remains remarkably true to the book.

The year is 1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation's past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country. Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French.

Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very opposite of Norrell. So begins a dangerous battle between these two great men which overwhelms the one between England and France. And their own obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts are going to cause more trouble than they can imagine.

The Miniseries is currently playing and will likely continue to play in cycles on BBC America. The miniseries glances over items that are covered in greater detail within the 800+ pages of this addictive novel, so reading the book will enhance your enjoyment of the program. The book is available at most major brick-&-mortar and online booksellers.

If you enjoy magic-themed novels, you won't be able to put Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell down.

*Chuffed - [British slang] Quite Pleased, Delighted. The creators of this program are Julian Mather of Australia and Ken Kelly of the UK and good friends of mine. I, too, am chuffed to see their contribution to magic made available through the I.B.M.. These two men have created a magnificent series of video magic lessons that every member of our fraternity will find useful. This is an incredible opportunity and I.B.M. member benefit! Highly Recommended!

Are you in the market for the truly weird and unusual for your magic? Pay a visit to The Rag n Bone Emporium's intriguing website. The Rag n Bone Emporium is a procurer of the unneeded, unwanted and unexplainable; if you don't want it, they've got it.

Step right up! Gather 'round! Don't shove, push or jostle, there's plenty for all. What they have to show you is nothing short of astounding, a marvel of modern science, technology and dare I even say, magic. Apparati of such that could only be concocted through the cunning ingenuity of a mental giant or found folded in the twisted mind of a demented scientist.

Browse among the 19th Century Traveling Vampire Hunter's Kit and a shotgun shell fired during the ambush of the notorious Bonnie & Clyde. You'll find one of Harry Houdini's handcuff keys and a padlock used by Harry Houdini. Examine a $20 bill recovered from hijacker D.B. Cooper's stash, the dusty fang of a slain vampire, or the tongue of a witch from the Salem Witch Trials.

Naturally, every item offered is a clever reproduction expertly aged and framed to attract interest and awe. It is a fun site to explore and one or two items may just inspire a creative spark or two for our budding mentalists and bizarre magic enthusiasts.

Hello, Everyone,

[6/12/2015] We had a nice size group of eight people in attendance last Friday: Virginia O., Mike G. & Pattie G., Austin, Steven P., Roger Way & his wife, Laura Escher, and me. We had an EXCELLENT "show" put on by Steven P.. He did an array of expertly performed gambling routines. Among these routines were a very nice presentation of Harry Lorayne's "Gambler vs. Magician" and Steven's own version of a Poker Deal. He performed another Lorayne routine called "Double Pancake Surprise" utilizing the "Gismo Flip." Showing that he is also versatile, he performed a very good coin routine inspired by his "grandfather," a routine similar to "3-Fly" but more interesting.

[6/19/2015]  We had a nice size group of sick -uh, I mean, six- people in attendance last Friday: Virginia O., Mike G. & Pattie G., Kevin R., Don C. and me. We had a wide variety of magic performed and discussed. Mike started the ball rolling by performing Crazy Marked card. He also performed some rubber band magic: rubber band jumps from magician's hand to a spectator's hand; rubber band ladder. Kevin performed Poker Test 2.0; card revelation using only the shadow of his finger: a card prediction effect (spectator counts and stops at a predicted card); cut to aces effect. He also performed the fastest rubber band trick in the world. Mike and Kevin both performed their versions of the Lazy Man's Handcuffs. The group had a good discussion of culling.

All-in-all, I would say we always have a very good time. We will not meet for lunch on July 3rd or July 10th. We plan to be back at our favorite table on Friday afternoon, July 17th at 1:00 PM at the Cary Crossroads Sweet Tomatoes.  Hope to see you there!
