"Cooking Matters" Class Teaches Participants How to Prepare Tasty, Healthy and Affordable Meals

Participants of Barnabas'  "Cooking Matters" program recently completed their six-week course of nutritional education and hands-on cooking instruction.  The goal of the program is to help low to moderate income families learn how to prepare affordable meals that are tasty and healthy.

Cooking Matters classes are free, fun and educational.  Each class is led by a team of volunteers, including a chef, nutritionist and assistants. These volunteers are trained to help the participants make changes to their eating, cooking and food-shopping habits.   Each participant receives a resource guide that contains healthy recipes, shopping strategies, nutritional guides and kitchen safety basics.

For the first time, the Cooking Matters class included young people ranging in age from 11 to 17 years of age.  Robert Peck, Barnabas Food Pantry Coordinator, remarked that it was wonderful to have young people in the class and shared the experience of a mother and daughter who after learning to read food labels, made a trip to the grocery store and the mother couldn't believe how her own daughter was reading EVERY label of EVERY item they put in their grocery cart.  She joked that the trip had taken twice the normal amount of time, but that making healthy food choice purchases was well worth the time.

More than 3,000 children and another 10,000 adults in Nassau County experience hunger or food insecurity, that is, they often do not know where their next meal is coming from. Barnabas addresses hunger in Nassau County by providing emergency food to individuals and families through partnerships with Feeding Northeast Florida and local merchants.  Last year, more than 250,000 pounds of food were provided to 2,120 households in need through the Barnabas food pantry.  For more information about the Cooking Matters course, contact Robert Peck at (904) 261-7000 ext. 121

Volunteer Appreciation Week

Barnabas is SO grateful for the many, many volunteers that help us out each day and serve alongside of us in helping to connect people with help and hope.  This year, National Volunteer Week is being celebrated from April 10 - 16.  National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities.  By working together, volunteers help us                                                          meet our mission.

Rock Steady Amelia Starts Program for Individuals with Parkinson's
Two local residents (and Barnabas volunteers), one with Parkinson's, have been working on a project to help change the way that local Parkinson's patients relate to and live with their affliction. Rock Steady, a program based on training for boxing, has proven to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

There are 85 affiliates of Rock Steady and now it is coming to Amelia Island! Rock Steady Amelia Island will start its training sessions on April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and on subsequent Monday/Wednesday/Fridays at Advanced Muscle Therapy on Gateway Blvd., near the Chamber of Commerce offices. The Gift That Keeps On Giving
The reality is that too many of our neighbors struggle each day,      trying to make a decision about whether to put food on the table, pay the rent or utility bills, or purchase medications or gas for transportation.  These individuals and families seek help at Barnabas every day for a range of services--food, emergency rent and utility payments, medical and dental care, and much more.  If you would like to help our Nassau County neighbors in need, please consider becoming a monthly donor. By setting up a recurring payment on Barnabas' secure website, much of the hassle is eliminated as there are no checks to mail. A monthly gift allows you to spread the payment across an entire year, lessening the financial impact to you. A recurring donation also helps Barnabas improve its long-range planning and decision making. Please visit Barnabas' secure online donation page to set up your recurring donation today, or click on the "Donate Now" button below to make your secure online donation.  Won't you please consider becoming a monthly donor today?
