Principals' Post
Updates from Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Brown

"Not All Superheroes Wear Capes" was the theme for our first Mystery Hero day.  Lyon students and staff enjoyed many visitors throughout the day.  These visitors placed a focus on work ethic, character traits, and exposure to their careers.  Our goal was to assist Lyon students in understanding anyone can be a hero with hard work, problem-solving, and perseverance.  Thank you to all the Lyon families who helped make this day special for Lyon students!

Volunteers Needed

Coach Brown is looking for Field Day volunteers who can assist in station set up and support throughout the day.  Lyon's Field Day will be on Thursday, May 12. Kindergarten-Second grade will be held in the morning and 3rd-5th will follow in the afternoon.  For more information or interest, please email Coach Brown at joe.brown@republicschools.org .
BSIP Update

Lyon students have done it again!  We have met our monthly attendance goal with 95.52% attendance in March.  We celebrated after Wednesday's assembly with Dairy Queen Dilly Bars.

Lyon Student Leadership

L yon Leaders have wrapped up their first year with student leadership within Lyon.  There is much to celebrate, and look forward to for next year.

Our most recent event was Leadership Academy #2; National Honor Society (NHS) joined Ly on leaders in celebrating  a successful service learn project.  They also picked next year's school-wide theme which will be "Hollywood".  We can't wait to see what our Lyon stars do next year!

The Spring Carnival and "Pucker Up for PTO" were both a success. Thanks to everyone who donated their time, pennies, silver, and bills.  We raised just over $1,200.  Our "Pucker Up" penny war brought in just over $200!

Now on to the most exciting part.  The "winner" who kissed a pig was....

At PTO's March meeting new officers were elected.  Thank you to these volunteers who will be serving Lyon for the 2016-2017 school year.  They are:
Brandi Lawson, President
Melanie Underwood, Vice President
Esther Nelson, Treasurer

Hope to see you at our next PTO meeting, which is Tuesday, April 26th at 6:00 p.m.in the Lyon Library.

A Note from Nurse Lisa

Playground Safety Week is April 25 th-29 th. Nicer weather means more consistent outdoor recess and more injuries. Playground injuries are the leading cause of injury to children ages 5-14 in schools. Nearly 40% of playground injuries occur starting now and the months of May, June and September.
Please encourage your student to wear safe shoes and talk to your children about the importance of playground safe practices.

Literacy Connection
Helping Your Child Find a Good-Fit Book
Many parents struggle when trying to help their students choose a book to read.  Although they are being taught at an instructional level during their small-group time at school, it is not important to focus on that level while choosing an independent reading book for your child.  Here is an acronym that will give you ideas of what to consider when choosing a book for your child:
"I PICK"
I choose a book
Purpose - Why do I want to read it?
Interest - Does it interest me?
Comprehend - Am I understanding what I am reading?
Know - I know most of the words.
