Out and Proud Week presents the largest opportunity for community visibility on the UC San Diego campus. It is a week-long group celebration and private reflection on the achievements of LGBT-identified students, staff, faculty, and our allies. It is also a time for public awareness and discussion of current LGBT issues on the state and national levels.

Two Critical Gender Studies classes will be meeting in the LGBT RC this quarter - check them out!
CGS 87: Intro to LGBTQ Studies. Professor David Serlin, Tues, 11-1pm.
This seminar will introduce students to important historical discussions and theoretical frameworks that have been central to the development of LGBTQ studies over the past five decades.
CGS 87: Who Cares? Professor Joseph Hankins, Tues, 3:30-4:30pm.
When does the pain of another matter to us? In this seminar we will discuss the labor of caring for different kinds of people and things. What kind of politics might be built out of compassion?

The event serves as the formal induction of the graduates into the family of the UC San Diego LGBT Alumni. Although many people do get dressed up for the event, it tends to be a queer little get together, with all the trappings of our community, so be yourself.

We're open to any medium, from paintings, doodles, prints, poetry, stories, zines, comics, film, animation, music, to 3-D art pieces. Be sure to keep the values of our space in mind when submitting your art work: Family, Community, Respect, and Social Justice.
Keep in mind displaying some of these may require creativity; discuss with Fri to figure out how to best display it.

Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies
Roshanak Kheshti seems driven to strive to make the world a better place, and to do so as a unique individual. She's been at UCSD since 2008, and in that time, she's written a book, she's conducted research, she's served as a role model of a queer woman of color, she's mentored various students, and she continues to be deeply engaged with the world around her.

heshti's book is called
Modernity's Ear: Listening to Race and Gender in World Music and it explores how desire and erotics are structured through listening. She looks at the American music industry in particular, and discusses how music has changed from what was once a queer form of pleasure into a mass market industry. Kheshti herself is a musician, who found that music served as "modality of survival" for her at certain points in her life. This book is the creative and scholarly result of merging her passions.
In Kheshti's undergraduate years at Indiana University, where she received a BA in Anthropology (Women's Studies), she was active in the LGBT struggle that was occurring on campus and nationally. She participated in forming a Queer of Color caucus and was part of a group called OUT which mobilized to get at LGBT center.
For graduate school, she attended UC Santa Cruz and recieved both a masters and a PhD. While there, she was part of the group Women of Color in Conflict and Collaboration which worked together to transform departments and communities.
Kheshti would advise young students to "not lose touch with the danger that queer sexuality poses - there's power there." She hopes that with all the visibility over victories like same-sex marriage, queer students hold on to the potential to be revolutionary.
And alongside that, she hopes that that the modern LGBTQ movement stays connected to other civil rights movements - it's a shared struggle for liberation.

Unsettled: The Refugee in the Hyperghetto talk

Dr. Eric Tang will explore the relationship between immigrant communities and African Americans as they experience common and distinct forms of state violence that take shape in America's inner cities. He has recently written a book on the subject, Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in the NYC Hyperghetto. Tang is an Assistant Professor in the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at UT Austin.

Queer Organizing in Palestine Today

Haneen Maikey, Co-founder and Executive Director of alQaws, the national LGBTQ Palestinian organization, is coming to lead a discussion
on how to challenge oppressive systems and offer creative strategies for leading real change in how Palestinian society perceives sexual and gender diversity issues. The program is part of the 2016 Nicholas Papadopoulos Endowed Lecture in Gay and Lesbian Studies, and is co-sponsored by the UCSD Critical Gender Studies Program and the Global Forum at I-House.

If you are an ally to our communities, we encourage you to attend the QPOC Conference on April 29 - May 1 at the University of California, Berkeley. The QPOC Conference is open to all individuals.
Through this conference, we hope to create safe and courageous spaces that foster the discussion of issues relevant to those who self identify as Black/African American or of African Communities on the LGBTQ Spectrum. Various Workshops, keynotes, and activities will be designed to unite our community and equip us with the resources necessary to face issues that affect us as marginalized individuals.

Academic Writers on LGBTQ Topics Needed
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Americans at Risk: Problems and Solutions will be a 3-volume reference on LGBTQI history, politics, law, and culture in the US. Each contributor will write an essay of around 8,000 words on their choice of topics. This project is open to all writers.

Survey of LGBTQ Military Personnel
A doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma is writing a dissertation on the identity process of LGBTQ people who have served in the U.S. military. They're interested in reaching LGBTQ U.S. military personnel, and heterosexual/cisgender
personnel who had a personal or professional relationship with an LGBTQ military service person (someone to whom an LGBTQ service member disclosed their sexual or gender identity).
