Alternate Words for Rain
Correcting an Omission
Inserting Morid Hageshem or Ya'aleh V'yavo After Completing the Beracha
|
During the winter months,
mashiv haruach umorid hageshem is inserted into the second
beracha of
Shemoneh Esrei. Someone who said
mashiv haruach but not
morid hageshem does not fulfill his obligation. However, if he said
morid hatal [with or without the words
mashiv haruach] he fulfills his obligation. If he realized his error before completing the
beracha, he should recite the proper words. If someone neglected to mention
matar in the
beracha of
Birkas Hashanim, the obligation is not fulfilled because the mention of rain in that
beracha is essential. If someone said
mashiv haruach umorid hamatar or
v'sein tal vageshem he is
yotzei, but one who said
morid hasheleg (He sends down snow) or
v'sein tal vasheleg (He gives dew and snow) is likely not
yotzei.

Someone who neglected to say
morid hageshem or
ya'aleh v'yavo (except on the night of Rosh Chodesh) and realized the omission after reciting
baruch atah Hashem at the conclusion of the
beracha (but before completing the
beracha), should continue with
lamdeini chukecha-and thereby recite a
pasuk in Tehillim (
baruch atah Hashem lamdeini chukecha) instead of completing the
beracha. He should then return to the omitted words and continue
davening from that point. For
v'sein tal umatar, however, he should complete the
beracha and continue
davening and insert the missing words in
Shomea Tefilla. For
ya'aleh v'yavo on the evening of Rosh Chodesh or any other passage that was supposed to have been inserted into
Shemoneh Esrei, he should continue
davening despite the omission.

Inserting morid hageshem or ya'aleh v'yavo after completing the beracha
Someone who completed the
beracha without the words
morid hageshem can insert the missing phrase before beginning
Atah Kodosh (preferably within
k'dei dibbur - the span it takes to recite 3-4 words-of
michaye hameisim). If he already started the next
beracha or
kedusha, even one word, he must restart the
tefilla. Likewise, someone who omitted
ya'aleh v'yavo (except on the night of Rosh Chodesh) and realized the mistake after completing the
beracha (
hamachazir Shechinaso l'Tzion) should recite
ya'aleh v'yavo before beginning the next
beracha of
Modim. If he already began
Modim, he must return to the beginning of the
beracha of
Retzei. Other added passages are not inserted if they are missed.

- The recitation of morid hageshem concludes at Musaf of the first day of Pesach. In congregations that do not recite morid hatal (particularly Ashkenaz congregations outside Eretz Yisrael), the conclusion of morid hageshem is not announced. Instead, the chazan makes the switch during his repetition of Musaf and the congregation switches during Mincha.
- Generally, if someone includes morid hageshem during the summer months, he does not fulfill his obligation and must repeat Shemoneh Esrei even in regions that require rain in the summer. According to some poskim, if the region is suffering from a drought he may complete his tefilla and then recite a second voluntary one.
- During the summer months, many congregations replace morid hageshem with morid hatal. Some of those congregations keep the initial phrase and say mashiv haruach umorid hatal.
