Notes and tips for woodland stewardship in Minnesota's forests

Oak wilt status in Minnesota: High risk
As of March 30, the state of Minnesota is in a high risk period for oak wilt. We recommend avoiding pruning or wounding oaks until midsummer to reduce the risk of a new oak wilt outbreak. Read more about oak wilt here.

Forest Management Guidelines: Join us online April 21

In this webinar, information will be presented on recent guideline revisions, a new user-friendly field guide, and a new approach being used to monitor guidelines across Minnesota's watersheds. Click here for more info.
Nontimber Forest Products Spotlight: Fiddleheads from the ostrich fern
Harvesting fiddleheads is best done when the fern has recently sprouted from the crown of the plant and is 4 to 8 inches long.
Click here to read more about harvesting fiddleheads this spring from the Minnesota Harvester Handbook.
EAB confirmed in Anoka County
The emerald ash borer was recently observed in Ham Lake, making it the seventh county to be quarantined for the invasive insect. County residents are invited to an upcoming public meeting on EAB to learn more about the insect and quarantine.
Meet The Junkers: Logging is all in the family
"The dairy cattle put food on the table, but if you wanted to get ahead, you'd better be logging because you weren't going any place with the dairy cattle." The Junker family has been logging in the Littlefork area for four generations. Read more from the International Falls Journal.
Planting trees this spring?
As the frost leaves the ground, April and May are great times of the year to plant trees. Do you know how to properly handle seedlings before you plant? How can you protect your new seedlings from damage like deer browse? Check out our page on planting trees for a number of useful resources, including videos and fact sheets to use this spring.
