Pot-Roasted Collard Greens
Here's a classic recipe in case you need to brush up on your grandmother's old technique while stripping down the unnecessary complexity of confusing recipes. Fresh ingredients and patience is all you need.
Ingredients
  • 8 cups collard greens, stems removed and leaves chopped into 1-inch squares, then rinsed twice and dried
  • ½ cup bacon lardons
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider or sherry vinegar
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Heat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven (with a tight-fitting lid) over medium heat. Add the bacon and let it start to render, then add the butter.
Once the butter has melted, add half of the greens. Season them with a heavy pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir and turn under the greens so they are coated with fat. Add the rest of the greens and repeat the seasoning and turning.
Cover the pot with the tight fitting lid and slide it into the oven. Roast for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, remove the lid, and stir. Add vinegar, stir well, taste and adjust the seasoning. Put the lid back on and let the collards set until ready to serve.

LAUNCH PT-305!
News of the Museum's Kickstarter fundraising campaign to put PT-305 back on the water has sailed far beyond our walls, with favorable coverage locally and nationally. More than 5 million subscribers saw Saturday's Wall Street Journal story, a testament to PT-305's imagination-stirring journey.
But just two days remain in the Kickstarter campaign to fund the last leg of that journey. Our total stands at $190,000, so we're very close to reaching our second "stretch" goal of $200,000. The clock is ticking, friend, and we need your help! Please make a gift of $25 or more today.
Hundreds of Museum friends like you have joined the team effort to help create a firsthand experience that will link new generations to the Greatest Generation-putting a fully restored, Higgins-built, combat-veteran patrol-torpedo (PT) boat on the water of Lake Pontchartrain.
Please know that your gift of any amount will go directly toward completing PT-305.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

Come one, Come all to a Very Festive Glass Raising, Fun(d)raising Party hosted by NOLA Women on Bike's Tour de Cure Team!  NOLA Women on Bikes has teamed up with the American Diabetes Association to ride as a team at the Louisiana Tour de Cure on April 16th. Wacky Wines, Wednesday 6-8pm:  While sommelier Kimi Kiviranna loves white Burgundies and grower Champagnes, she also has an obsession with the unusual - wines that wear the unadulterated signature of the place. But as all things go at Swirl, being different is not enough, the wines also need to be delicious, fun and a pleasure to drink. So this week we want to share 4 wines that fit our definition of "Kimi wines". The flight of these 4 unique and amazing wines is $15 and reservations are not required.

Thursday, April 7, 5-8pm- Julia Stefanski's launch party for her adult coloring book, "Walking through New Orleans" a tribute to our city's unique and awe-inspiring architecture. For more information: Coloring Book Launch Party

Friday Free For All, April 8, 6-8pm  Join us tonight for our weekly free tasting hosted this week by Cindy Johnson - no reservations required! Theme is TBA

Happy Saturday Happy Hour, 4-6pm - Weather permitting, our friends Phil deGruy and Emily Robertson will be at the shop Saturday, adding a little music to our popular happy hour. Get a glass of your favorite wine at half price and wander on out to our courtyard for some amazing guitar and vocals from two of our favorite local musicians. No cover charge but generous tips are greatly appreciated :)

Free Tasting Wednesday, April 20 - Since we don't do our Friday free tastings during Jazz Fest we decided to kick off the festivities with a free Wednesday and a visit from Jeff Miller and Brutocao Wines - Winemaking traditions often begin around the table. Brutocao's roots go back two generations to a Venice, Italy, dinner table. When the Brutocao family came to the New World and married into the Bliss family of farmers, it was only natural that they would combine their passions and become grape growers and winemakers. Today, the family still blends their Italian heritage with their rural agricultural lifestyle to craft new world wines with old world flair.

Direct from Broadway, the acclaimed masterpiece returns to New Orleans! As part of their 50th Anniversary Season, Roundabout Theatre Company is proud to present Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall's (Into The Woods, Nine and Chicago, the films) Tony Award®-winning production of Cabaret.

Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd--and to leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times?

Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including "Cabaret," "Willkommen" and "Maybe This Time." Leave your troubles outside - life is beautiful at Cabaret, John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff's Tony Award®-winning musical about following your heart while the world loses its way.

For mature audiences only.

Ogden After Hours - Spencer Bohren
    click for more info...
    06:00 PM - 08:00 PM

Born into a gospel-singing family in the wind-swept prairies of Wyoming in 1950, Spencer Bohren began singing and playing music as youngster. At fourteen, inspired by the folk music he heard on the radio, Spencer picked up a guitar and within a few weeks started performing in public. He immediately delved deeply into America's treasure of blues, country, gospel and folk music, soaking up guitar styles and historical details. In the 1960s and 1970s, Spencer played with rock, country and blues bands throughout the western US. By the mid-1970s, Spencer and his wife, Marilyn, found a spiritual home in the city of New Orleans, and started their family there.
New Orleans had a profound effect on Spencer, and he quickly became a fixture on the local music scene. Spencer began touring, this time in the southern U.S. Before long he made the daring decision to bring his family on the road so they could be together. For seven years they lived on the road, Spencer performing around the U.S., sharing his love of America's music and singing his own original songs. He also began a recording career, which has produced 16 albums.
In 1997, Spencer developed Down the Dirt Road Blues, his award-winning history of American music, which he has presented to 30,000 students of all ages, as well as concert audiences in America and Europe. His educational offerings have grown to include visual art, guitar workshops, and talks on songs of protest and music business, inspiring countless budding musicians. www.spencerbohren.com

Tributes to Allen Toussaint at French Quarter Festival
Special Events to Honor the Beloved Performer

Allen Toussaint, one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B, unexpectedly passed away in November 2015 while touring in Spain. Earlier that year, French Quarter Festival was honored to feature the celebrated songwriter, record producer, and musician throughout the 2015 French Quarter Festival - with a performance on the riverfront Abita Stage, participation in the Festival's Let Them Talk symposium to talk about his life and career, and his attendance at the Festival's Film Fest, where a new film about him was screened. Toussaint was also the 2015 'Face of the Festival', with his photograph gracing the French Quarter Festival publicity and advertising campaigns.

At the 2016 event, three special events will honor him.  On Friday, April 8 an official after-party hosted by the House of Blues, Tribute to Toussaint, will be a fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting Toussaint's foundation - New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness (founded by Allen Toussaint & Aaron Neville in 1985). Performers include The Allen Toussaint Band, Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Big Sam (Big Sam's Funky Nation), James Andrews, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Davell Crawford, Robin Barnes, and more. Doors open at 8pm for the 9pm show. Tickets range from $35-$70 and are available at http://www.houseofblues.com/neworleans/ or the House of Blues Box Office at 225 Decatur Street, New Orleans (504-310-4975).

Also on Friday, April 8 at Whitney Bank Film Fest at French Quarter Festival with Timecode: NOLA, the film A Tribute to Toussaint will be screened to celebrate the life of the late musician, composer, producer, and humanitarian. Additionally, the 2016 Film Fest will be dedicated to the beloved performer.

Sunday, April 10, the festival's Let Them Talk: Conversations on Louisiana Music symposium will present From Southern Nights to Hall-of-Fame Heights: Remembering Allen Toussaint. During this panel, Grammy-winning record producer Scott Billington and an all-star panel - including another Grammy-winner - the great Irma Thomas; award-winning music journalist and biographer Ben Sandmel; bassist Roland Guerin - a long-time member of Allen Toussaint's band, and Reginald Toussaint, who managed and performed with his father for over 25 years, will share Allen Toussaint stories and memories.

2016 NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FESTIVAL POSTER !
House of Swing: Portrait of the First Family of Jazz
Ellis Marsalis' musical dynasty-a father and four sons that swing like no other-inhabits an allegorical house in this brilliant portrait of the first family of jazz that doubles as a loving portrait of the Crescent City's beauty and grace. Graphic master Paul Rogers' companion piece to his classic 2002 Jazz Fest portrait of Wynton Marsalis is a further exploration of his unique "soulful precision" style.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
