Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy: The Couples Weekend is a 3-day event designed to help you and your partner grow past the hurtful cycles that keep you stuck. Check out our PLAY THERAPY TRAINING events in June.

Last month, Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy hosted 19 people from Japan. They travel to Chapel Hill every year to learn redecision therapy and transactional analysis. This summer, Vann Joines, PhD, will travel to Japan to continue the training, which will result in the establishment of a redecision training program. This spring, he also will travel to Schenzen, China; Beijing, China; and Bangkok, Thailand, to conduct training.

If you are interested in learning more about redecision therapy, a powerful short-term therapy that quickly gets to the heart of the problem, you don't have to travel to Asia. This summer, July 25-30, we will offer the comprehensive week-long  Mastering Redecision Therapy workshop here in Chapel Hill.

We have many more workshops coming up, including a comprehensive overview of Energy Healing in Psychotherapy July 22-24, with Gary Peterson, M.D. This month, April 14, Gary will present, " Using EMDR with Traumatized Clients" at  the 12TH Annual UNC Horizons Conference . May 20, He will  present "Dissociative Disorders and Trauma" at the  NC Nurses Association Psych Retreat. Read more about these events below.

Finally, we'd like to thank those of you who signed up and attended our first webinar event last March! You helped make it a success. We have already reviewed and incorporated many of the ideas you submitted through the feedback form. We look forward to learning more and doing more as we embark on this online training frontier. The April 9 free webinar topic is "The Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder" with Vann. CEs are available for those of you who attend the entire event online. We hope you'll join us.

Warm Regards,

Vann, Gary, Emily & Meredith

Couples Weekend

May 20-22

Don't give up before you know what's possible.

Three reasons to try the Couples Weekend:

1. Couples Therapy has Evolved!
Research about the brain and early attachment relationships has enhanced the art and science of couples therapy.

2. Patterns Repeat
You might think you are with the wrong person when in fact you are with a hurtful pattern. You can leave your partner, but you won't leave the pattern ... until you learn to change it. The only place to change a relational pattern is within a relationship. Why not this one?

3. Power in Numbers
The thought of doing couples therapy among other couples is often intimidating. In the end, we hear that it is inspiring! In addition to offering insight into your own relationship, having other couples present offers hope and gratitude. It also allows the therapists to use effective therapy techniques that can only be accomplished in a small group.

Epigenetics Presentations at the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology  Annual Conference, June 2-5, 2016 | Santa Clara, CA

By Gary Peterson, MD

Epigenetics is the study of the effects of stress on our genes. It is
a burgeoning new area of science that is changing our understanding of emotions and behavior, sickness and illness. It is the study of
how stress, particularly in childhood, causes under-production or over-production of proteins. These alterations in protein production can produce many problems including cancer, autoimmune disorders and mental disorders. This alteration in protein production can be passed down through generations, and it can be relieved with the help of psychotherapy. New research is showing more and more how this can happen.

Epigenetics will be featured in two of the Conference keynote presentations. Drs. Lipton and Church are researchers and long-term friends of energy psychology

You can download the conference brochure here. I hope you can attend the conference.

Energy Healing in Psychotherapy

With Gary Peterson, MD
July 22-24, 2016

Energy healing in psychotherapy is a family of treatments rooted in mind-body healing traditions that are over 4,000 years old. Energy healing methods include practices from ancient Chinese medicine freeing the flow of energy along channels (meridians), in energy centers (chakras) and with energy fields that surround the body (biofields).

Energy psychotherapy trauma-informed care can gently and swiftlrelease  the effects of disturbing and traumatic consequences of events that are frozen in time within the bio-energy system. These petrified events can constrict a person's flexibility and productivity, affecting, how the mind regulates sensations and emotions, how the individual relates to others, and how a person interprets surroundings and functions in the world. To the end of having trauma resolution, this workshop is designed to bring to you, the clinician, a flow of information to introduce clients to concepts of energy healing from the very first session. Clients will become comfortable with these intriguing theories and practices.

You will learn how to:
  • Include balancing, calming and centering techniques in your routine.
  • Use energy centers and Chinese meridian acupoints for self-soothing and for resolution of intense internal conflicts
  • Use energy tapping methods to reduce stress and to repair emotional and somatic disturbances.
  • Confidently use muscle testing with your clients.
After attending this energy psychotherapy workshop you will know how to bring these concepts and procedures into your clinical practice:

  • History of energy psychology

  • Overview of energy psychology methods
  • Calming, centering, balancing procedures
  • Use and function of muscle testing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a complex, integrative method of individual psychotherapy in which the therapist guides the client through a procedure to access and resolve troubling experiences and emotions. EMDR brings together elements of many psychological orientations, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, and bio-energetic approaches to psychotherapy. The EMDR procedure provides an effective therapy for the treatment of trauma.
