Taking the Plunge
The first time I did the Polar Bear Plunge, it was a last minute decision.  It was already December, and I had been waffling on my decision.  It looked so cold!  I am notorious for never being warm, and I was scared because I had read a few articles that had put the plunge in a bad light.  With three weeks until the big day, I sucked it up, made a donation page, and put my intentions out into the world.  I couldn't back out now.

In the time leading up to New Year's Day I talked to everyone I could about what I needed to know so I could be fully prepared on the big day.  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still nervous and scared, but now I was committed.

On the day of, I stood on the beach, carefully removing all the layers of clothing I had donned, laying them out on my blanket in what I had decided was the optimal placement for getting everything back on when I came back from the lake.  I stood in my bathing suit, staring out at the very cold looking lake, asking myself just what I had gotten myself into.

When I finally ran into the lake I was surprised.  It wasn't that bad!  In fact, it didn't even feel that cold.  The further into the lake I went, trying to get deep enough to dunk my head, the better I felt about everything.  When I was finally out far enough, I dunked my head, and came back up sputtering.  Dunking your face definitely takes your breath away, but, shockingly, I didn't feel all that cold.  As soon as I caught my breath, I ran back to my blanket.

As I put on my socks (the very first item and the only one I really cared about putting on), I wondered why I had been so scared.  The Polar Bear Plunge was exciting and exhilarating and nothing like the random horror stores I had read.  As I put on thick, fleece pants, I had already decided to sign up again next year.

My Adoption Story

On August 29th I lost my greyhound Peace, who was 13, to bone cancer. My other hound, Luka, was lonely as he had become the only dog in my house, having lost my wired haired fox terrier Scout last November. I needed to find him a new friend.

I had heard about the TGIE program at the GEM event last  May. I was touched by the passion and love that everyone who works in the program has for these greyhounds. My friend Kathy adopted Bozo from the program in June, and I turned to American Greyhound to help me find my new hound.

I have to admit that my preference was for a cow dog but the black and white hound named Sugar had an adoption pending when I submitted my application. I was intrigued by one hound's description and decided to apply to adopt a greyhound named Kem.

I was nervous the day I went to meet Kem after he graduated from the TGIE program. He had been in a foster home for less than 2 days. Would he be the right hound for me and Luka? How would I know, would Luka give me a sign that he was the one?

I brought a friend along to give me an objective opinion. As she walked Kem around the store she said that I should give him a try, he seems like such a good boy.

While I was signing the paperwork Kem's foster Mom said to me- I think you have your sign- Luka was leaning on Kem. In my Jeep on the way home Luka laid next to Kem to comfort him and let him know everything was going to be OK.

Kem, who is now Carter has been an amazing, wonderful addition to my home.  When Carter roached on his bed it made me so happy. Neither Luka or Peace ever roached. My new boy was happy in his new home.

Carter has already attended three meet and greets for Regap of Illinois with my Luka. We attend a meet and greet every weekend, every month for the past 7 years and will continue to do our important work of promoting greyhound adoption.

There isn't a word in the dictionary that can express how much I love Carter. He is the best boy, so sweet and loving and everyone tells me how stunning he is. He has helped heal our hearts. I know Peace is looking down smiling.

Thank you so much for all you do for the hounds. I have included a photo of Luka (the brindle on the left) and Carter sharing a bed.

All the best,

Jan, Luka and Carter
