Letter from Pastor Melissa
So Now What?

Bishop Will Willimon writes on Mary's experience at the tomb, "Like the voice that shatters glass, the voice of Jesus has shattered Mary's world, called her forward to new possibilities, new future." Easter changed everything for the world. It has the possibility to change everything for us. Mary's world was shattered by the voice of the risen Christ causing her to set aside her image of God, her understanding of Jesus that she had up until that point in her spiritual journey. God shattered that image so the new could emerge in her life unhindered by her past preconceived understandings.

The same is true with us when we allow God's voice and God's action in raising Jesus from the dead to shatter our vision of God. When our vision or understanding of God is shattered, we open ourselves up to the new way God is working in our lives and in the world allowing the change to take place in our lives.

So now what? How do we practice being open to this newness God is bringing into the life of our congregation and into our personal lives? First, we are taking every opportunity to grow into this newness. So we are not taking the Sunday after Easter off. If Easter is one of the largest days of visitor attendance, we invited them back to a full worship celebration. I will be in worship, your choir will be in worship and I hope to see you in worship on Sunday, April 3rd.  Second, in the next few weeks we will be exploring who this transformed Jesus is to us. In addition we will explore how we can personally develop, understand and expand the image of God we have had up to this point in our spiritual journey.

Remember Jesus came back. . . you can to!!!

Worship Through Surrender
by Scott Mocha

Hello Friends, happy spring to you!  We're heading out of the Easter season, and moving full-force into this new image of God, our Creator. We may already have the new image, or it may still be forming, but undoubtedly God calls us to learn about, see, and understand Him in new ways as we move forward in our faith-journey.

This is also true with our images and understanding of worship.  While we are forming new ideas and new (and hopefully deeper) relationships with God, the ways that we worship and commune with Him also must evolve.  Now, I am not talking about visiting the contemporary service for a week (although you should), or maybe trying to put your hands up during a song, I am speaking more about the ways we worship with our hearts, the ways we spiritually push-in to what God is calling us to do.

One particular way to worship that I feel God has been talking to me about, is worshiping through surrender.  This means giving up control of things in my life that I fight hard to keep control of, and giving that control to God.  This is most clearly evident in the big things in life, our relationships, marriages, children, and (of course) finances; that giving up control of those things is an act of worship. This is absolutely true, but it is also about giving up control of the little things, the things that make us stressed out, anxious, and that make life hard.

The next time that you find yourself feeling anxiety over any little thing, I invite you to give that thing to God, and really give it to Him.   Say a simple prayer, "God, I am giving this to you, and I trust that you will handle it and show me the path towards your will."  That's it, that's all it takes, then you can literally let that anxiety go, and sit back and watch the Spirit of God move.   God hasn't called us to live lives of stress, in fact, he sent his son Jesus so that we can live freely (Luke 4:18), and abundantly (John 10:10).  So embrace that, and let your embracing of that reality be another form of worship between you and God.

See you at Church,

- Scott

What's Happening
The Maturing Ministry (M&M's) meet the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month.  We will celebrate birthdays on April 8th and Earth Day on April 22nd.  Coffee and Goodies at 9:30am, program around 10am and lunch at 11:30am.  All Seniors are welcome!

The Joyful Bible Study group meets on every Tuesday at 9:30am.  The next book to be studied will start on April 5th.  The book is "The God We Can Know - exploring the "I am Sayings of Jesus" by Rob Fuquay.  There is a video that was filmed in Israel to go with the study.  Come and enjoy the book with us.

COSROW wants you to save the date - the now annual
Mother's and Other's Tea will be held on Saturday, May 14th.

Hospitality Committee is looking for some "smiling greeters" for the Sunday morning worship services.  A very easy job - just smile and shake hands!  There is a sign-up sheet in the Lobby (Narthex).  Thank you!

J.A.M. Club
A huge thank you to all of those volunteers who made the Rise Up With Jesus a successful event for our children and their families: Kari and A.J. Beattie, Carrie McPhee, Melissa Day, Diane Taylor, Brandon and Gabby Gonsalves and her mother, Christy Gillette, Lee & Mike Wolfe, the Bennett/Hoar family, Sydney Kreuzberger, McKenzie Welsh, Team McKinnon, and our kitchen crew who cooked a fabulous spaghetti dinner with no power, Donna Spencer, Noelle Flinn and Ron Smith.  A good time was had by all as our children learned about Jesus's experiences during Holy Week through game and activity centers.

Our J.A.M. (Jesus And Me) programs are going well with the division of the Sunday morning classes into 3 groups.  We could still use additional youth and adult volunteers as the number of children in attendance is growing weekly.

We are also in need of adult and youth volunteers to help with our Surf Shack Vacation Bible School pr ogram during the week of July 18th.  Please sign up on t he Children's Ministry Board  on the patio on Sundays or contact Melissa Day or Marianne Smith to let them know you are interested.

Part 2: 50 Ways to Welcome New People
Be intentional about saying hello and goodbye.

10.  Station greeters at all entrances, in class-room areas, and in the parking lot or entry walks, if appropriate.

11.  Identify your greeters and ushers with a special badge or name tag so visitors who need information can easily identify them.

12.  Encourage friendly, out-going persons with the gift of "hospitality" to serve as greeters and ushers.  Provide regular training that helps them see the church through a visitor's eye.

13.  Escort newcomers to the nursery, classrooms, coffee hour, etc.  Don't just point the way or give directions.

14.  Adopt the "rule of three" which says members will not talk to other members in the first three minutes following the service - typically how long it takes guests to exit.

15.  Enact the "circle of ten" rule - that each member will greet anyone, member or guest, who comes within ten feet of them.

16.  Say, "I don't think we've met before..." if you are not sure if the person next to you is a member or a visitor.

17.  Ask outgoing church members to sit in the pews where visitors most commonly sit, often near the entrance or in the back.

18.  Post someone at every exit to shake hands and thank people for coming.  Ask worship participants (readers, music leaders, liturgists, etc.) to do this since their faces will be familiar.

19.  Accept and encourage casual attire.

20.  Do not ask visitors to stand and identify themselves.  70% of new attendees feel negatively about being recognized.  However, they do expect people to be friendly and welcoming.
