The first season is under way, and we have some tight competition with a three-way tie at the top!  It's not too late to sign up.  We are dropping the lowest point total, so even if you miss a week, you're still in good shape.  Also, registration for the Summer Season is up and running.

Golf Skills Academy
Since we have changed our schedule to 6-week classes, we have decided to place Golf Skills Academy between seasons.  The first GSA class will begin after the conclusion of the Spring season, on Saturday May 7th. More details regarding locations and times coming soon...
Lexi Humbert
This month's Rising Star is an outstanding participant who exemplifies everything The First Tee stand for.  Lexi is only 13, but has already certified to Eagle level.  Her dedication to the program, to golf, and to the values we teach earned her the opportunity to be a featured speaker at The First Tee Trustee Dinner.  In attendance were several of the people who make our program possible, including former President George W. Bush. Let's get to know a little bit about Lexi:
What do you like most about
golf and The First Tee?

What I love most about Golf is how fun it is to me and how a lot of girls don't play this sport because they think it's for boys only. I love when I swing a golf club, there's just something that makes me smile. The First Tee is dear to my heart because it doesn't just focus on the game of golf but everyday life skills that can apply to home and school. It's what really started it all for me!

What do you hope to accomplish
in golf, school, and life?

In golf, I hope to play in college and from there my biggest dream would be the LPGA. In school I would like to become a Doctor and be involved in finding a cure for Diabetes. My life goals are to experience everything that comes my way and to enjoy life.

What have you already accomplished in these areas?

In school I have a 3.9 GPA and keep all A's.  In golf I play for Greeneville Middle School and the Sned's tour. I was able to be a guest speaker along with my mom for the First Tee and meet President Bush #43! That's a big highlight for me! I enjoy practicing a lot as well. I also play Volleyball for GMS. I'm very active in my church and God is always first in all that I do.

How often do you
practice and play?

I practice every day and my coach Sasha Catron has helped me develop practice routines. I play 2-3 matches per week and in the summer I try to play as many tournaments as I can. This summer I will be playing every Saturday in a tournament from April-September at my home golf course at Link Hills.

What would you like to tell other participants of The First Tee?

I'd like to tell other kids that this is a life long game that can be enjoyed through all walks of life. It can put you in uncomfortable situations, but it helps you grow all the way around. Believe in yourself and keep a positive attitude in anything that you do.

Lesson 24 - Appreciating Diversity
The word "diversity" is a very "diverse" word in that it means different things to different people.  Eagle lesson #24 asks students to interview another person to find out what things they have in common, and what their differences are. We often appreciate those things we have in common.  They bring us closer together, forming bonds of friendship. We can also appreciate the things that make us different, and even benefit from those differences.  Each person has a unique life experience, which can be a valuable resource for many things including advice or insight into another person's thought process. No matter what a person's background, each one of us has a different talent that sets us apart, whether it be athletics, music, art, or academics.  These differences make us stronger as a community and enable us to make the most of our relationships.
Eagle Fundamentals:
Memory Storage of Desirable Process

If you've ever heard of "muscle memory," you already know what this lesson is about.  If that concept is new to you, it basically means that you repeat a motion until that motion is natural to you.  Golf is a very unnatural motion, which makes it one of the most difficult sports to learn.
Now we all know that muscles don't really have a memory, but the term was invented to convey the idea of locking a certain motion into your brain's memory. Think of playing the piano.  Nobody can read a book on how to play the piano and play a complex song immediately after. It takes years to fully master the art of the piano, and it can only be done by repeating the proper motion over and over. This is why it takes Professional Golfers 10,000 hours of practice to make it to the PGA Tour. Our bodies are not designed to be good at golf from the beginning. In order to master the swing, you need hours upon hours of repeating the proper motion to lock it into your muscle memory.
