Science and the Mind

Rather than host a science class that attempts to merely survey different disciplines of science like physics, chemistry, ecology, and biology, this course is based around a common theme: the Mind. While physics and mathematics are foundational disciplines of science in the traditional sense, subjects like the brain, behavior, thought, cognition, and consciousness are the ground those disciplines build upon. The foundation emerges from the realization that the presence of these subjects that encompass the mind is required for all human interaction including: the study of science itself, the state of being awake, and even reading this passage.  None of this would be possible without the mind. No one discipline can study the mind, which is why multiple disciplines must be understood and coupled together, using many lenses to examine this single foundational field of study.

should be able to understand:
  1. The basics of the life sciences, i.e. organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, evolutionary biology and ecology.
  2. The concepts that encompass sciences that pertain directly to the study of the mind, i.e. Neuroscience, Cognitive Science and Psychology.
  3. The applications of the sciences that study the mind i.e. psychopharmacology, A.I., and Clinical Approaches.

Andrew Kornfeld is an instructor in the Ubiquity University Undergraduate School. He holds respective B.A. and B.S. degrees in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of California, Santa Cruz. While at School, Andrew served as co-founder and president of a prominent student led and initiated organization called the Brain, Mind and Consciousness (BMC) Society. The BMC's mission is that of gaining an integral and comprehensive understanding of human behavior, neuroscience and psychology through creative student facilitation. Under his leadership, the organization has engaged thousands of students, through educational events, student directed classes and a conference. He recently co-authored a chapter in the Handbook of Transpersonal Psychology with James Fadiman Ph.D. (in press by publisher Wiley) regarding neurological mechanisms underlying psychedelic compounds. His primary areas of interest are in understanding how our external environment shapes the brain and thus also shapes behavior. Andrew Kornfeld teaches the undergraduate core course on Science and the Mind.
