Volume 22  |  Issue 2  |  April 2016

In last month's addition of LIFE Line we told you about how exciting it was to finally move into our new complex. We want to thank all our volunteers who spent hours in renovations and moving us into this new campus. The sailors from NAS Jax for their many hours, Board members, participant's families, staff, and local businesses for volunteering to make it all possible for BASCA. They have painted walls moved equipment and furniture from our old locations. It seems like they have moved furniture from one end of the complex and back several times.
We also want to thank our group of Faithful volunteers that have been coming Tuesday, Thursday and sometimes on other days. They hung doors, fixed light fixtures, installed modular desk and file cabinets.  They installed cabinets, counter tops and modular partitions. We could not have done this without our army of volunteers.
We still have some renovations to do to a couple of the buildings. So things will continue to be exciting around herewith everyone trying to decide where the best place for things is.  Our programs are in the process of being updated and expanded for the benefit of all our participants.  Custom Creations 1 has changed its name to Creative Learning Center.
The Life Skills 3 program previously at Island View Baptist has temporarily moved into our large conference room and training rooms till the renovations to their new space is completed. That should be sometime next week.
Our successful BASCA Activity Night previously at Island View Baptist Church has now moved into the new complex with over 50 participants and staff attending on March 23.
Every day is exciting around here, you never know what staff will come up with next.
Moving into the new complex with its additional space and opportunities has increased the number of participants.  The number of tours has increased as the community comes to see firsthand all the excitement. Phone me at 541-1742 to set up a personal tour.
We give all the prayers and glory to God for this wonderful building and for those who have and continue to make it possible.

Sincerely,
John Cone
Executive Director of Community Development

Participant Highlight: 10 Years of Service
Story excerpt reprinted from the March 2016 edition of the Neighbor to Neighbor

BASCA of Orange Park Life Home resident, Michael Holliday, recently received his ten year employment recognition pin from Scott Geeser and Melissa Harris, owners of the Orange Park Dairy Queen.
Ten years ago Marj Holliday visited the Dairy Queen with a request for employment for her son Michael. With her sense of Michael's capabilities, Marj spent hours at the Dairy Queen and with the assistance of Scott, Melissa and staff seamless adjustments were made for Michael for a daily routine.
With BASCA providing transportation Michael has the ability to enter the work force. He moves thru his duties each morning with a smile and a willingness to assist others. Over the years, Michael has gained the respect and friendship of the staff and customers.
"We love Michael" said Angie Huffstetler "he is always happy as he does his work. He especially likes working outside."
Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

L.I.F.E. Home News
Lilly Bowers, at your service!
Peoria Welcomes 3-Legged Resident
Story and Photos by Rhonda Bowers

Meet Lilly, a 3 year old Chiweenie (half Chihuahua and half Dachshund). Last December Lilly was rescued from Clay County Animal Control. So many people passed over Lilly and did not want a dog with three legs, but the minute I opened her cage Lilly leaped into my arms. All Lilly wanted for Christmas was a family to call her own and now she has one at the Peoria L.I.F.E. Group Home.
Peoria, just like our headquarters, has been in transition and the changes have increased tension within the house.  When Lilly appeared on the scene everything changed.  A certified service dog, Lilly assists when someone has a panic attack or anxiety issues. She can sense a problem well before it appears. The girls take turns feeding, watering, and taking Lilly outside. Lilly wakes the girls up in the mornings. She waits for them to do their routine then she will sit next to them on the couch until it's time to leave on the van. She sits at the window until the van pulls off and watches at the window until they return. Once she hears the van beeping to back up she greets the girls at the door one by one.
Lilly has a special friendship with each of the girls. Lilly just fell in love with Candice and gets super excited when she sees her come in the door. Julie was afraid of dogs at first but once Lilly won her over they became best friends. When it's bed time Lilly jumps on the bed and tucks Becky in.
Lilly has been a great asset to Peoria as she keeps the house calm. We love her so much and could not see the world without her. Lilly goes almost everywhere with Peoria. She has gone to Good Time Tuesday night, to the movie theater, and even does a little shopping. It's hard to believe that no one wanted her because of her disability. She has 3 legs and when Candice first saw her she said "Lilly is disabled just like me". The personality Lilly has lets everyone know just because you are different does not mean you can't do anything you want to do.

At the movies.
Waiting for the van.
Saying good night.

Program Highlight: Life Skills Development
New Home and New Names for Life Skills Development

Many of you may know our Life Skills Development as ADT, or perhaps you have called the specific program by its location, such as IVBC. Now that we are in our New Campus we can no longer use those old location names as a reference. Thoughtful consideration and discussion took place as to how to distinguish our Adult Day Training programs and what the future will look like for each program. We are pleased to launch the new names for our day programs:
  • Fundamental Skills Center (formerly ADT and previously located at IVBC)
  • Creative Learning Center (formerly known as CC1 and previously located behind the Plainfield office)
  • Custom Creations Training & Manufacturing (formerly known as CC2 and CC3 formerly located in the Industrial Loop)
Along with the changes in name, a new program calendar is being created each month providing wonderful learning opportunities including art projects, sciences projects, and field trips. Participants are still learning valuable life skills such as cleaning, gardening, and vocational skills.
The month of March was very exciting as participants created homemade thermometers, visited the Orange Park Fire Department, created candy picture frames, attended a concert at Orange Park High School, made "Shamrock" trail mix, took a trip to the Green Cove Springs Park, and held an Easter Egg Hunt.
