Summer Garden

Our summer garden has been planted!

Our AmeriCorps VISTA and volunteers had a great time gardening in the beautiful weather. The new garden will contain green onions, cilantro, carrots, and tomatoes in addition to the thyme that survived the winter. Later in the summer, clients will be able to pick items from the garden and try new recipes that include our fresh garden ingredients!

If you have any recipe suggestions or ideas about fall/winter hardy plants, please contact our AmeriCorps VISTA at [email protected].

April Health Facts
April is National Stress Awareness Month. Prolonged periods of stress can have serious negative health repercussions. It is important to monitor stress levels and recognize when a break is needed. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following methods for reducing stress:
  • Get active! Try walking, jogging, gardening, housecleaning, biking, swimming, weightlifting, or anything that gets you moving and releases endorphins.
  • Laugh more! Try reading jokes, telling jokes, watching a comedy, or hanging out with funny friends. Laughing lightens your mental load and creates physical positive changes in your body.
  •
  • Connect more! Try getting coffee with a friend, emailing a relative, volunteering for a charity, or visiting your place of worship. Connecting with others creates a mental distraction and builds a support network.
  •
  • Assert yourself! If you have too much on your plate, delegate tasks or say no to taking on new projects. While saying yes may keep the peace, it can lead to internal conflict, stress, anger, and resentment.

For more information and ways to reduce stress, visit Mayo Clinic Stress Reduction.

April is also National Lawn and Garden Month. Gardening is a great way to relieve stress and enjoy the spring weather. If you are not ready to start a garden, consider volunteering for the Hatcher Garden in Spartanburg. Volunteers, called Hearts of Hatcher, help to maintain the public grounds and give garden tours. For more information, visit Hearts of Hatcher.

April 7th is World Health Day. Diabetes awareness is the annual World Health Day Campaign for 2016. According the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 350 million people have diabetes worldwide and 90% of cases are type 2 diabetes. The number of cases is expected to more than double in the next 20 years. In 2012, the disease was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths worldwide, with more than 80% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. The WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death by 2030. However, change can be made! One goal of the WHO is to increase access to diagnosis, self management education, and affordable treatment. For more information on the goals of the WHO and diabetes awareness, visit WHO Diabetes Press Release or WHO Diabtetes Awareness Homepage.
