It's been a busy couple of weeks in Michigan with gas chamber status. At the start of 2015, only 4 of Michigan's 83 counties were still utilizing a gas chamber to kill unwanted animals in their shelters. Three of the four have banned the practice:

  • Van Buren County: On 8/25, the decommissioned gas chamber was driven to the scrap yard by shelter director Kasey Murphy, who was happy to see it go. See the story here
  • Berrien County: On 8/27, the county board of commissioners unanimously passed a resolution that mandates lethal injection as the only form of euthanasia permitted at the animal control facility. See more information here.
  • Cass County: On 8/28, Animal Control Director Michael Grice announced that "The agency will stop using the euthanasia machine effective January 1, 2016 or sooner." See more information here
Branch  County, however, remains the LAST county in Michigan to use a gas chamber.

Michiganders for Shelter Pets report that on August 31,  Branch County Sheriff Pollack confirmed that the gas chamber in Branch County animal control was not destroyed in the shelter fire in late May 2015. He also indicated that they were NOT leaning towards decommissioning the gas chamber.

Branch County residents, please contact your county commissioner and let them know that you want the gas chamber banned form your county! Find your commissioner below. Consider attending the  Branch County Board of Commissioners meeting today at 4:00 p.m. See details here.
