SCIA Information
September is Spinal Cord Injury
Awareness Month

The United Spinal Association Golden State Chapter is starting a viral hashtag campaign to help celebrate, using #morethanmychair.

The idea is simple : have people with SCI post pictures of themselves doing activities outside of their wheelchair.  Too often the general population think people that live with paralysis are confined to their wheelchairs and live a sedentary life. This campaign's mission is to smash those stereotypes by showcasing pictures of wheelchair users doing things outside of their four wheels.

The Chapter wants people to post their picture(s) on various social media sites, mainly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and put #morethanmychair and #SCImonth in the caption. The campaign will take place throughout the month of September, but hopefully the message that we are, in fact, more than our chairs, will resonate beyond.

Picture ideas: people participating in adaptive recreational activities like swimming, surfing, skydiving, handcycling, waterskiing, snow skiing, etc; driving a car or flying an airplane; someone standing or exercising in physical therapy; or a person simply sitting on the couch with family with their wheelchair nearby.

Here are some caption ideas that people can pair with their photos:

1. I am not confined to my wheelchair. I am #morethanmychair.
#SCImonth #spinalcordinjury #TriumphOverSCI

2. I am #morethanmychair. Are you?
#SCImonth #spinalcordinjury #TriumphOverSCI

3. My wheelchair does not define me. #morethanmychair #SCImonth #spinalcordinjury #TriumphOverSCI

4. Just because I use a wheelchair, doesn't mean I'm just sitting around. #morethanmychair #SCImonth #spinalcordinjury #TriumphOverSCI

5. My wheelchair is a tool. It does not define me.  #morethanmychair #SCImonth #spinalcordinjury #TriumphOverSCI

This is a great way for people to celebrate this important month and post fun pictures.

SCIA Newsletter Survey

A survey conducted by Elmhurst College students, under the direction of Professor Tim Buividas, will be studying organizational leadership, management and development.  This survey will be of particular interest to those who are spinal cord injured, family members of those with SCI, and health professionals.
This is a great opportunity for us at SCIA to learn the needs of those who are spinal cord injured and the ways the association can help. We would also love to hear input on what you would like to see the organization do. This survey will be conducted by Elmhurst College students.

RIC Survey for Travelers with Disabilities

This study focuses on three aspects of airline travel for people who are non-ambulatory:
1- Using a boarding chair or lift system to get down the aisle of a plane and into the airline seat.
2- Sitting on a standard economy airline seat for the duration of greater than a two-hour flight.
3- Transporting and protecting the wheelchair that is stowed in the belly of the aircraft.

Data collection will include consumer input, participation in a simulated boarding process assessing passenger and flight attendant posture and safety, pressure mapping and postural tendencies after transferring into an airline seat, and detailed methodology of manual and powered wheelchairs being transported to and stored in the belly of the aircraft.

The outcomes will provide design concepts and parameters of assistive technology to improve the safety, comfort, and quality of the flight for the passenger and wheelchair.
The hands-on research is being done at RIC with assistance from airlines using O'Hare International Airport.  To provide input about experiences travelling from a wheelchair user's perspective, please use the following link.   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/airtravel_survey
