Happy Birthday, Magnificat!

Sixty years ago today, 63 students became the first class of Magnificat High School as the school opened with a celebration of Mary's feast on September 8, 1955 at Wooster School because the current building was not complete. Founding Principal, Sister Bernadette Vetter, H.M., known at that time as Sister Mary of Lourdes, conducted the school with two other Sisters,   Sister Bonaventure Murphy, Sister Dominica Murphy, along with Helen Lyons and  Aileen Toth. The class would move to the one completed section of the building in September 1956 at the present location of Magnificat on Hilliard Boulevard. The new building would be dedicated on another feast of Mary, the Holy Rosary, on October 7, 1957. By the time of the first graduation, 19 more students had joined the historical ranks of the Class of '59.

These early Sisters now surely smile on Magnificat from the life beyond, adding their prayers to those who pray daily for Magnificat, including former Principal, Physical Education Teacher and Debate Coach,  Sister Claire Young  (Mary Pius)  praying for us from the Villa. Perhaps unimaginable at the time, it is a glorious thought that Magnificat's alumnae now number over 11,000 and connect from across the United States and around the world.

Happily, classes ending in years "0" and "5" will join us in Reunions this weekend, with the Class of 1965 joining us for its 50th Reunion on September 19. All classes of alumnae, as well as families and friends, will gather for the Installation of our fourth President, Ms. Jenifer Hebda Halliday '95, on Sunday, September 13 at an 11 a.m. Family Mass in the Magnificat Center for the Performing Arts.

Please join us in spirit today, September 8, sharing your fond memories of your years at Magnificat with friends, family, class members and with Mrs. Maggie Mroz Lamb '84, Director of Alumnae Relations, [email protected], or on Facebook.

Please plan to return to Magnificat for another memorable and historic moment to be treasured far into the future. It truly is a day and year to celebrate!
