One of the great educational treasures of the Ohio River Basin is the Life Below the Waterline, a traveling freshwater aquarium. This aquarium is displayed at public events within the Ohio River Basin to show the diversity of fish living in the Ohio River.

Life Below the Waterline is a 2,200 gallon mobile aquarium owned and operated by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), an interstate water quality agency. Built in 2002, it is one of only twelve traveling educational aquariums in the United States. The two 5' X10' viewing areas display the diversity of life sustained by the Ohio River and the improvements that have been made in water quality. The aquarium is filled with locally caught fish which are released after each event. It is displayed at 10-15 events annually and over 100,000 people view the display at events ranging from small schools to large city festivals.
