Happy Season of New Beginnings!

Whether you are a Southern Om regular or getting this email for the first time, we are so grateful you are part of our community.  Together, we are embarking on a journey of health and well-being through the practice of yoga and self-discovery.

We are excited to announce two class changes on Saturdays and two fabulous workshops this month.  Read on for all the details!!

SUPER SATURDAY CLASS CHANGES!
Starting Saturday, April 2, we are changing up our Saturday afternoon line-up.

2 pm Southern 26 will still be 90 minutes of 26, but now it is just $5 to come to class!  Our Friday night community class has been so popular, we wanted to give our 26 students the same opportunity. This is a great way to introduce new yogis to the moving meditation we call Southern 26.  Join us!

4 pm Southern Flow will now be a 75-minute Deep Southern Flow.  Our morning Deep Southern Flow (formerly Slow Flow) classes Mon-Fri have been so well received, we wanted to bring this class to the weekend schedule.  This is a slower-paced version of the Southern Flow series which will allow you to go deeper in your postures and really feel the benefits of each posture land in your body.

Bhakti Flow Yoga - Saturday, April 9
Join Erick Herlong on Saturday, April 9 for a Bhakti Flow Workshop from 6-8:30 pm.  If you have never tried Bhakti Flow, we invite you to join Erick for a special evening of yoga, chanting and discussion. Cost is $25 per person. No yoga experience required to enjoy this beautiful evening. Read more below, and sign up  here.

Yin Yoga - Saturday, April 30
Melissa Howard returns for this quarterly workshop designed to stretch and relax your body and mind.  If you missed the last one in January, sign up here!  Cost is just $20 per person and the workshop will last from 6-7:30 pm.  We will repeat this workshop every three months on the last Saturday of the month

Feel free to always reach out to us with any questions or concerns you have.  We are so glad you are here.

Namaste-

Pace & Sarah

The 4 pm Southern Flow will now be a 75-minute Deep Southern Flow from 4-5:15 pm.  We have been offering Deep Southern Flow (formerly Slow Flow) at 8:15 Monday through Friday and this is the first opportunity we have had to offer this class on the weekends.

MEET THE TEACHER: ERIKA SKEWES

We are so pleased to announce that Erika Skewes has joined the SO teaching community!  Erika has been part of the SO family since 2014 when she joined our Work Exchange Program.

"I started my yoga journey in 2013, learning from YouTube videos and practicing at home, until my dear friend convinced me to try out a yoga studio.  I have always thought of yoga as a way to self reflect and grow.  Our bodies have physical limits, which can put limits on mental growth.  Through asana we heal and work the body which inevitably allows for the mind to grow! I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training with Ally Ford Yoga in October 2015.  Through this training I learned more about how to incorporate all aspects of one's self into their yoga practice!"

Erika will be teaching the Deep Southern Flow and Southern Flow series at Southern Om.

Upcoming Workshops
Take Your Practice to the Next Level!
Bhakti Flow Yoga
Saturday, April 9
6:00-8:30 p.m. with Erick Herlong

Bhakti flow combines aspects of love, compassion and healing with the grace of vinyasa flow yoga. This workshop will not only stretch your body and your breath but will also stretch your heart by inviting you to move beyond the physical aspects of the practice and experience the asanas on an emotional level.

The workshop will begin with a short talk, which will introduce Bhakti yoga along with a theme. This theme will be woven throughout the workshop. We will then have a 90 minute asana practice with specially selected music which will enhance the theme and energy of the class. We will incorporate universal mantras through Kirtan (singing together) - at the close of the class. This workshop will challenge you to let go of anything in your life that feels stagnate, it will empower you to create the life you desire by asking you to embrace the truth of who you are. The workshop will seek to provide a space for you to explore your yoga practice on a deeper more personal level in an effort to encourage you to live your life to its highest potential.

Cost is $25.  You can pay online or at the Front Desk.

*NOTE - this workshop lasts until 8:30 pm.

Bring water, mat towel and yoga mat.

You can register online or at the Front Desk. Payment is due upon registration.

YinYoga
Saturday, April 30
6:00-7:30 p.m. with Melissa Howard

Please join Melissa Howard for an hour and a half of Yin Yoga! In a Yin Yoga class, you will hold a pose for 3-5 minutes. When holding a pose for longer periods of time the practitioner is able to get into the deeper parts of the body, the Yin parts.

Tendons, ligaments, and joints are exercised, not stretched and the benefits of Yin are endless. Another benefit when exercising these yin parts, we also tap into the lines in the body, called meridians, that connect with the organs in the body. During this workshop we'll focus on the spine, forward folding, back bending, twisting, and side flexion, as well as the hips. This is a workshop you won't want to miss!

As good as it will be for the body, a Yin practice can be challenging for the mind, because we rest into the poses. You will be talked through each posture and gently guided from one pose to another with more yang like movements to help the the continuation of the blood flow to these yin-like places in the body. This will also help ease the mind when it seems to get mentally challenging! Sounds fun, yes?!

Cost is $20.  Bring a mat, towel and water.

You can register online or at the Front Desk. Payment is due upon registration.

The Simple Shift That Will Finally Let You LOVE Your Body

As a former violinist, I hated the way my arms jiggled when I played a fast piece on my violin. While I was performing, I was convinced everyone was staring at my arms, which I thought were bigger than the rest of my body and made me look disproportional. After a car accident stopped me from practicing violin professionally for good, my arms felt worthless to me.

When the pains from developing carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis took a toll on my body, I couldn't even hold a fork and knife. I felt weak and pathetic, and it took me a while to get to where I am today-actually having accepted my body-arms and all.

Most of us hate some part of our bodies. After all, we are conditioned to think we are not beautiful. Society says we don't measure up to celebrities with perfect skin and bone structure. We are not tall enough, skinny enough, beautiful enough to feel deserving of ourselves-often especially people of color. Why else do we keep buying hair removal tools, eyelid tape, or face-slimming devices?

When you stop body-shaming yourself and others, you will feel your worth. You will come to know it. You will eventually grow to love that part of your body that you absolutely detested before.

But we can change that. Here's how I did.

Over the course of a few months, as I developed a consistent yoga practice, my arms started to change. I felt stronger. I was stronger. I could do a push-up without collapsing for the first time in my life. I also started lifting weights to build muscle. I loved that I could pick up heavy boxes without panting or open tomato jars without feeling like my fingers were going to break. When I felt strong, I really began to feel in my body.

I also stopped engaging in body shaming. When my friends complained over brunch about how much they hated a part of themselves, I stopped agreeing with them and adding fuel to the fire. I forced myself to say positive things in the mirror. I banned all negativity from my brain and my mouth.

When you stop body-shaming yourself and others, you will feel your worth. You will come to know it. You will eventually grow to love that part of your body that you absolutely detested before.

I researched myriad diets and incorporated more healthy foods like fruits and vegetables into my meals. I wanted to feel better internally-and I knew my eating habits could help. I told myself over and over that my self-improvement was in the service of a healthier, happier me rather than a skinnier, prettier one.

When I shifted my thinking toward improving my health rather than trying to look a certain way, I was truly happier.

I wrote a list of reasons I used to hate my arms and then described how I feel about them now. When you start thinking of your body as a functional mechanism, your negativity will dissipate.

When I became a yoga teacher, I studied human anatomy in depth, and I had an epiphany. The body is a convoluted system with one function: to help you live your life.

You don't have to become an anatomy geek to appreciate your body. Just accept that the body you were born with will reward you when you treat it right. The part or parts that you dislike are probably things another person wishes they had. Reflect on the things you can control and accept the things you can't. Stop trying to conform to someone else's standards of beauty. You don't belong in someone else's body. If you can find the beauty in yourself, others will find it, too.
