Generation Schools Network Awarded 9 AmeriCorp VISTA Positions by the Corporation for National and Community Service

Nine VISTAs have been requested to join Generation Schools Network and its partner schools in Colorado and Ohio in their work of ensuring that all students, regardless of life circumstance, have access to a great education. The GSN team is partnering with the following schools and BOCES to place the VISTAs on the ground to complete critical work: Pagosa Springs Elementary School (Pagosa Springs, CO), Bayfield Middle School (Bayfield, CO), Santa Fe Trail Colorado BOCES (headquartered in La Junta, CO), the South Central Colorado BOCES (headquartered in Pueblo, CO), West Generation Academy (Denver, CO), and Cincinnati Generation Academy (Cincinnati, OH). The GSN team provides coaching and technical assistance to these schools in order to ensure that teachers and students are accessing the full benefits of GSN'sschool model and resources.

The VISTA members will develop tools and procedures specifically in the areas of parent engagement, volunteer management, community partnerships, and social media communication that can be utilized and implemented long after the VISTA members have completed their terms. The requested VISTA activities will include developing and implementing strategies for social media communications, developing training materials and best practices for teachers and administrators to further parent engagement, helping to solidify the on-boarding process, training materials, supervision, and appreciation of the volunteers coming to work with GSN and its affiliate schools, and building community partnerships. The VISTA project will last for three years with new VISTA members being hired each year. Generation Schools Network's project manager will work with site supervisors at each school and BOCES hosting a VISTA member to help them recruit, hire, and supervise the VISTAS as well as measure project performance measures.

West Generation Academy Students Complete Internship Program

BBB Foundation SMARTS program gives students hands on workforce experience

On Thursday, May 28th, West Generation Academy (WGA) students delivered their spring internship experiences with friends, family, and staff at the first annual WGA Intern Showcase. Nine 11th grade students shared Prezi presentations describing their accomplishments and the challenges they faced during the 11-week long internship. They provided insight into their favorite, and least favorite, aspects of the experience. "My favorite part about the job was the diversity," shared Stefany Galindo-Bernal, who interned for the Denver VA Hospital. "Every time I got to hear something new. They [the patients] shared their life stories with me."

Generation Schools Network Team Members Awarded as Community Partners by the UCD School of Public Affairs

Each year the UCD School of Public Affairs recognizes its community partners and offers awards for their contributions. This year two Generation Schools Network team members were chosen as the recipients
of the Individual Community Partner award for their support of the Ford-related study at Englewood Schools!

Wendy Loloff Piersee, GSN CEO and Mary Jo Reinhard, GSN Project Manager for the Rocky Mountains received Community Partner awards for their support of Todd Ely's research. He noted that they "...generously supported my case study of their partnership with Englewood Schools. The project would not have been possible without their active involvement and willingness to share their work and knowledge."

Approximately 75 attendees gathered at the Epernay Lounge on May 19, 2015, for a community partner and student capstone celebration. The event celebrated the accomplishments of students whose capstone projects were selected for recognition by School of Public Affairs faculty. It also recognized and thanked individuals who mentored students during the academic year and organizations that sponsored capstone projects, hired student interns, worked with faculty on research projects, or partnered with SPA in other ways.
