Open Arms Free Clinic featured in new documentary

Next week, April 4-10, is Wisconsin Free & Charitable Clinics Week, in recognition of work done by clinics across our state. One such clinic, Open Arms Free Clinic in Elkhorn, is prominently featured in an upcoming documentary about free clinics that will premiere next Tuesday at the state Capitol entitled "The Need Continues" (click here to view a short preview). You're invited to attend this event and/or talk with Sara Nichols, executive director, to learn more about this video as well as the kinds of care that is offered at OAFC.

That care goes far beyond traditional medical care. Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Better Together Fund through Aurora Health Care received in 2015, behavioral health services have been fully integrated into Open Arms Free Clinic. The clinic works closely with CA Counseling Consultants to oversee the project, with eight providers and two licensed clinical supervisors, three MSW students, one post-grad and two licensed clinicians.

Services begin at patient intake on Wednesday afternoons. To date, more than 130 screens have been completed. If needed, patients are invited to begin counseling or may benefit from referrals to other services. As of late February, 53 patients have received services within the clinic. What's more, the OAFC volunteer team has integrated behavioral health at multiple points of care - nurse triage, doctors, pharmacists and advocates. Taking care of the whole person is helping OAFC complete the mission originally set forth by founding board members.

Please let me know if you're interested in learning more.
