Cornelius Pass cleanup completed 24 hours ahead of schedule

Crews worked through the night to finish the Cornelius Pass Road cleanup ahead of schedule.

Crews completed the cleanup of contaminated soil on Cornelius Pass Road at about 7 p.m. Saturday (March 26), 24 hours ahead of schedule.

"This project was a challenging one, particularly in terms of scheduling, and our staff rose to the challenge," said Andrew Singelakis, Director of Washington County Land Use & Transportation. "I appreciate the hard work and coordination - particularly on a holiday weekend."

The southbound lane of Cornelius Pass Road, between Old Cornelius Pass and Germantown roads, closed at 7 p.m. Friday [March 25] as Kerr Contractors, a contractor hired by Washington County, began the process of cleaning up contaminated soil under the roadway. The cleanup work was expected to continue through 7 p.m. Sunday [March 27]. To minimize delays and inconvenience to travelers and neighboring properties, crews worked round the clock to remove the roadway, dig out the contaminated soil and then replace the roadway.

On Jan. 8, a tanker truck overturned into the west ditch after a crash with a pickup truck. Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue prevented the spill from contaminating groundwater. Subsequent testing revealed contamination under about half of the southbound travel lane.  Media release
