"Seeing, Believing, Living"

Dear Members and Friends of Our Savior's Lutheran~

Last Sunday when I was on vacation, I had the privilege of going to worship with a pastor friend of mine who was preaching at a diverse congregation in North Minneapolis by the name of Redeemer Lutheran. I've heard a lot of great things about this community - both about their vibrant faith and their community struggles - so I was excited to be with them in worship.

From the moment I walked in the door, there were many things that were very different from a typical Our Savior's experience. I was enveloped in a huge bear hug from the usher (whom I hadn't met before), heard the musicians creating the versions of music that they would be improvising that morning, and enjoyed the interactive sermon time with all of the "preach it!" "amen" and "mmhmm" interjections from the congregation. The service itself went well over an hour, and we didn't even have communion.

And yet, at the same time, I heard liturgy that I knew by heart, sang some of the same hymns, and had no difficulty recognizing the Spirit of Christ in this place. I walked away fed by the word and loved by a community. All of this really made me wonder - do we sometimes get so caught up in the "correctness" of our worship that we miss the utter gift that Jesus gives to us? How much of our interaction in worship is about what we want and expect from God, and how much is gratitude for what God has already done?

This week Mary, Peter, and John arrive at the tomb to find it empty. Each one of them experiences something different. Is Jesus present for all of them? Is Jesus present for us? I look forward to exploring these questions with you on Sunday!

Remember that our 9:30 service will take place in Lakeside Park in Bayport. Bring a chair to sit in and a dish to share for the post-worship picnic. We will also be blessing backpacks, briefcases, and whatever else you are taking on new journeys this fall.

See you in Church,

Pastor Dawn Alitz

Girls Night Out Movie Survey:
The women's team has been showing movies on Fridays at 7:00 pm, four times during the year in September, November, January and February.  We would like to find out the ongoing interest in this event and get feedback on how to gain greater attendance for this event.  We have enjoyed great fellowship and discussion about some very good movies and would like to share this with more women in our community. Blank paper surveys are available at the Welcome Desk and on the Women's Ministry Bulletin Board - once completed, return in the drop box at the Welcome Desk. Or, if you prefer to complete it electronically, it can be found on the church's website within women's ministry, and can be returned to [email protected]. We appreciate your feedback. Thank you for your time.
