Back to school? What better way to prepare yourself then to experience some historic fun and learning.  They are a variety of events and exhibits to explore this month, for all ages and interests, at a number of "Passport 2 History" historic sites!
Leonis Adobe Museum
  Cops & Cowboys  Rescheduled for September 12!
You are invited to a good old-fashioned Hoedown and BBQ to support the Mid Valley Community Police Council at their annual fundraiser, "Cops & Cowboys" being held at the Leonis Adobe Museum on Saturday, September 12 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

 

Meet at the Mid Valley Saloon & Gambling Hall for hosted libations. There will be a silent auction, live auction, line dancing, poker and black jack. Enjoy mouthwatering BBQ by Marshall's Bodacious BBQ, live music featuring Eli Locke and the Locke and Loaded Band, awards presentation and more!  Dress is casual country wear.  (Discounted admission for Leonis Adobe Museum members).

The Barrelhouse Wailers serve up their own take on Prohibition era hot jazz and blues music of the 1920s and 1930s. They perform only on acoustic instruments to retain the authentic sound of that period. The Wailers bring their passion and energy to the style, making it as fresh today as it was when it was the newest, hottest dance music 90 years ago! They have been influenced by a cocktail of artists, past and present, like Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Asylum Street Spankers, Gershwin, Sydney Bechet, Billie Holiday as well as traditional New Orleans jazz, classic blues, country blues and jug band sounds.

The long-lost community of Foster Park will briefly return to life at the Ojai Valley Museum on Sept. 13 during a Town Talk featuring author Gwen Alferes and reporter Bill Warner of the Ojai Valley News. Alferes lived in Foster Park as a child and Warner extensively researched the history of the Foster Park Bowl for an article in the current Ojai Valley Visitors Guide. Town Talks coordinator Mark Lewis will moderate the event.

Ghost Shipwrecks Recently Discovered Off San Francisco's Golden Gate 
SANTA BARBARA MARITIME MUSEUM

There are thousands of prehistoric and historic submerged sites waiting to be discovered. Robert Schwemmer, West Coast Regional Maritime Heritage Coordinator for NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries served as a principal investigator during these missions in 2014 and 2015, and will share his research revealing the final moments leading up to the sinking of these ships and the cutting edge technology used to record each wreck, one in nearly 3,000 feet of water.

For the first time ever the Dominguez Rancho presents a military timeline covering periods from 600 AD to 1900AD. Learn about the different eras in history, how people lived and how their militaries work.  All of these cultures and periods will come together on the lower grounds at the museum.  This is also a lead up event to the museum's Mexican American War reenactment and Living History event on October 10th and 11th.

Local photographers Robert Watt and Dennis Schuett are featured in this photography exhibit that captures two different perspectives of one subject, the Santa Barbara Channel. Both photographers grew up in rural, landlocked, middle America and were drawn to the allure of the ocean. In this experimental exhibit, they show how photography can capture one subject in unique and diverse ways.

Hair Jewelry

This exhibit is  one of the best collections of hair work jewelry in the country. The collection donated by Andrea Tice. Andrea's Mother, Carmelita Johnson, was one of the first persons to write a book exclusively about hair art and Mrs. Johnson amassed one of the largest collections of the unusual pieces in the United States. The display has been designed by Darlene Appleford whose exhibits are always done with great skill and artistry.

Fine art and action sports photographer, Russ Hennings, will be exhibiting a collection of his coastal landscapes and action photography.  As a staff photo-grapher  of Oakley, Inc. Russ Hennings has served on numerous shooting assignments in Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii, Tahiti and Mexico. Prior to his position with Oakley, Russ Hennings began his career with Surfing Magazine.

A native of Santa Paula, George Lockwood has made paintings that can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and around the world. Lockwood is known for his depictions of wildlife and landscape, as well as local scenes and a variety of subject matter from many parts of the country.

Join us in offering elementary school students and the community the opportunity to make lasting connections to their local history, culture, and natural surroundings at the DANA Cultural Center. DANA is seeking to recruit new docents to help with the interactive learning stations featured in our field trip program, as well as docents to give tours of the Dana Adobe on weekends.
