PS PAWS
Part 1: Wednesday 2/10
Part 2: Wednesday 2/24
6:30 PM
Many of our teams visit patients in the mental health sites. PAWS believes it is important to help teams understand different mental health issues, how disorders present themselves, and how teams can provide the best and safest visit possible to people in this situation.  By understanding why people behave in a particular way, PAWS teams can provide a more personalized visit for the patients as well as assist site staff with increasing motivation, lessening anxiety, and giving the person hope for their future. Highlights:

- Learn about a variety of typical mental health disorders and how symptoms may present

- Gain understanding of how to use your therapy companions to provide the support and non-judgmental attention and presence

- Learn how to keep yourself and your therapy companion safe in a situation that may become troublesome

Therapy Dogs in the Courtroom: Maryland Senate Bill 55

Last Tuesday, PAWS Members, Officer Carey Gerres & Kilo, Judge Keith Baynes, and L ynne Robinson, went to Annapolis, Maryland to testify in support of Senate Bill 55 ( read the bill here ). This legislation invites therapy dogs to visit with children while they are waiting to testify and/or accompany them into the courtroom.

We all know the amazing effect our therapy dogs have on those who are anxious, frightened, and confused. Allowing a therapy dog to accompany a child in a court room opens the door to the possibility of the child providing crucial testimony in cases where they may be too scared or anxious to speak. Maryland's kids need this legislation and our support.

PAWS for People supports this bill and we encourage any Maryland team or reader to contact Senator Gladden to express your opinion on this topic.

If you live in Maryland and would like to show support for this bill, please contact Senator Gladden today!

This team visits Christiana Hospital, Avon Grove Charter School, Ronald McDonald House and will soon be visiting Nemours. A few months ago at Ronald McDonald House, they met a young girl who was wheelchair dependent; Luna and the girl developed a special bond. A few weeks ago, the two met again. This time, the young girl was able to walk using her new prosthetic legs to give Luna a hug.
