January 2016
Student Emergency Fund

The Student Emergency Fund was founded in 2013 to help our students with quick financial support when they encounter unforeseen emergencies.  This fund makes a difference, it helps students in their times of need.

Help us reach our goal of $5,000 for the Student Emergency Fund so that we may continue to help students who face tragedies.

A student from the Saint Vincent Phonathon will be calling to tell you more about the Student Emergency Fund - please take the time to learn about the many great things the Student Emergency Fund has done in the last three years, and consider making a gift to this worthy cause.

Alumni and Friends of Saint Vincent,

I am pleased to share the news that Shawn Gouch, assistant director of admission and financial aid, has been named our director of alumni relations, effective Feb. 8.

Shawn is a 2009 graduate of Saint Vincent, having earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. During his years as an undergraduate, he worked as a student recruitment assistant. He has since earned an MS.Ed.in community mental health counseling from Duquesne University.

After working as a case manager with Renewal Inc. in Pittsburgh and intern therapist at Gateway Rehabilitation in Greensburg, he returned to join our admission team as a counselor in 2011 and was promoted to assistant director in 2015.

In his new role, he will be responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the college's alumni program, which maintains relationships with more than 13,500 Saint Vincent graduates in the United States and around the world. Reporting through Institutional Advancement, the office plans alumni-related activities designed to enhance many facets of the college and to encourage alumni participation in the college's development.

I'd like to offer my since thanks to the search committee for their work to fill this important position:

  • James K. Laffey, C'75, Alumni Council President

Bendel's Corner

Friends,

Thanks to all of you who responded to the recent Federal legislation concerning distribution from IRA accounts.  In a few short days at the end of December, you gave more than $279,000 through these charitable distributions!  Your gifts certainly will aid the college, our students and faculty, and the substantial tax benefit you receive is possible because of your good planning and stewardship.

As you develop your plans for contributions to charitable organizations in 2016, you don't need to wait until the end of the year to see what Congress will do about your IRA accounts.  The legislation to receive tax benefits from IRA distributions given to charities - such as Saint Vincent College - has now been made permanent!

Establishing a scholarship fund or directly supporting the Student First effort at Saint Vincent is a great way to help our current and future students.  If you need any assistance making that decision, don't hesitate to call me.  I am available 24/7 to chat with you.

If you haven't yet, please take time to visit our  planned giving page.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for all you do!
