Thank You JanBoree 2016 Volunteers!
The Waukesha JanBoree added a new tour stop this year - your airport! Thanks to EAA Chapter 18 volunteers and pilots, the Young Eagles program helped 79 kids take flight, many for the first time!

Other community volunteers took the reins in guiding children on the flight simulators, facilitating aviation-related crafts and handling concessions. Pencil us in for next year's JanBoree in January 2017!

In Memoriam: Larry Gygax

It is with much sadness that we report the passing of fellow Waukesha aviator, Lawrence "Larry" Samuel Gygax. Larry passed away on January 6 at the age of 79. Larry was a past president of the Waukesha Avaition Club in 1986. He owned and flew an ultra-lite and a 1941 Taylorcraft off his own airstrip at his home on Center Road, Waukesha.

A memorial fund has been established in Larry's honor for young pilots to be trained. The Waukesha aviation community will greatly miss him. Please keep Larry's family in your thoughts and prayers. Blue skies, Larry!

Happy New Year! I sincerely hope that this first edition of the newsletter finds you well and looking forward to a great year of aviation.

2016 started off strong at Crites Field with a successful Young Eagles Rally on January 16. Thanks to all the volunteers and pilots who helped 79 kids get their first taste of flying!

We have been steadily preparing our initiatives for the coming year which range from improvements in customer service to hangar projects and airspace protection. Keep an eye on the newsletter for updates and changes as we progress through our aggressive schedule.

I am closely following U.S. House of Representatives Resolution 4441, which proposes imposing user fees to pay for the privatization of the Air Traffic Control system. While this measure is being promoted by the airlines, aviation groups such as NBAA and EAA are voicing strong opposition to the bill. Click here to see NBAA's opening statement by Ed Bolen. I urge you to educate yourself on the proposal and voice your opinion to your representative soon. The bill was passed by the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee last week.

Finally, congratulations to Zignego Company for winning the 2015 State Aviation Project of the Year Award for their work reconstructing our runway last summer. We all appreciate your great work!

Thank you and fly safe,

Kurt

Matt Grenoble Receives Recognition from Waukesha County
Silver Winner of the Waukesha County Core Excellence Recognition Program
Matt was nominated for the exceptional cost-saving measures he proposed and enacted during the June runway closures.
Utilizing local resources, Matt was able to save $118,000 to keep Runway 18/36 open and usable as much as possible during the intersection construction work on Runway 10/28.

Waukesha County offers this quarterly program to recognize employees that exhibit its core values including collaboration and teamwork, high quality customer service, innovation and improvement, ethics and integrity, communication, diversity and respect, efficiency and seeking cost savings, which Matt exemplified in this project.
Zignego Wins Award for Waukesha Runway

Zignego Company, Inc and the Runway Reconstruction Team received the 2015 Wisconsin Outstanding Airport Project Award! The expedited nature of this project was truly a rare and amazing feat being designed in 10 weeks and constructed in only 15 weeks!  As luck would have it, worse than expected subsurface soil conditions were discovered under the runway intersection at the most critical phase of the project. Zignego provided excellent leadership and coordination of the subcontractors who were simultaneously working in very constrained areas by providing an extensive workforce, equipment and resources to complete the project on time and in budget.
The subcontractors who also performed well and made this outstanding project possible are:
  • Musson Brothers: Excavating
  • Highway Light & Landscape: Airfield Electrical
  • Highway Landscapers: Erosion Control & Landscaping
  • CTC: Traffic Control
  • Payne & Dolan: Asphalt Paving
  • ICS: Joint Sealers
  • Michels: Concrete Crushing & Aggregates
  • Crowley Construction: Airfield Painting & Marking
  • Penhall: Pavement Grooving
  • Soils & Engineering Services: Sub-Consultant to Mead & Hunt
In the 80-year history of Crites Field, this is the most significant infrastructure improvement both in scope and in economic benefit. Zignego's expertise and dedication combined with their ability to assemble a reliable group of subcontractors directly contributed to the success of this aggressively timed project. Our gratitude and congratulations to the 2015 Outstanding Airport Construction Award Winners!
  • Dan Sweeney - Project Superintendent: Zignego Construction
  • Greg Stern - Project Manager: Mead & Hunt
  • Marcus Kuhn - Resident Engineer: Mead & Hunt
  • Andy Trimble - Project Manager: WI Bureau of Aeronautics
Operations Update by Matt Grenoble
Notification System
We are currently developing a notification system that will give us the ability to alert airport tenants and users of important information such as Gate closures and detours.

An example would be, if Gate 11 at the Southeast hangar area breaks down, we can send an email to all Southeast tenants informing them to use Gate 9. Airport users are being added based on the location of their hangar but we do not have everyone's email addresses.

If you would like to be on this list, please send Matt Grenoble an email at [email protected] informing him of the area in which you would like to receive these notifications (SE hangars, SW hangars, North Ramp, Terminal and West Corporates).

Snow Update
The weather was quite mild in December and we escaped with just one snow storm. However, that one storm was a very difficult one. We had 6 inches of snow/sleet mix and then the temperatures dropped dramatically, making the removal quite difficult. January brought more snow, but in smaller doses each time. The groundhog apparently did not see his shadow this year, but we're always prepared for a long winter anyways!
