RAAM - 2-15-16
Christoph Strasser will sit out the 2016 Race Across America (RAAM). After lung issues forced him to withdraw from the 2015 Race Across America, Strasser (Austria) was looking forward to returning this year to race for his fourth win. But last week he announced he will not participate as he continues to recover from injuries suffered in Sept., when he was hit by a car while on a training ride. Strasser has been upbeat despite this setback, saying, "Life is not only about sports. Life is much more; life is about friends, about family, about people who are helping you when you have a bad situation."

The convergence of Highway 80, BART, Caltrain and even the Oakland Airport make the Oakland Raiders' present coliseum location ideal.

Andy Dolich -- 2015

The Silver and Black Are Back ... and a Stadium  Primer

By Andy Dolich

When we last left the Silver and Black they were told by their NFL brethren that There is a There and they would be heading back to There. The Oakland Raiders would not be taking up residence any time soon in the land known as LALA.

It might serve a purpose to separate fact from fiction as it relates to where Team Bedouin may end up, both in the short and long term. During the past few years, months and weeks, team owner Mark Davis has talked about moving to a new stadium in Carson, Oakland, Inglewood, San Antonio, St. Louis, San Diego and now Las Vegas. The public has been bull rushed with all manner of important business points relating to the future home of the Raiders.

Fact
*  The Raiders have agreed to a one-year lease at the O.co Coliseum,
     with one-year options in 2017 and 2018.
*  The Raiders and the Oakland A's are the only NFL and MLB teams to
     share a sports facility.
*  The Raiders ownership has the smallest net worth of any franchise
     in the NFL.
*  The Raiders have won three Super Bowls.
*  The Raiders have played in Oakland for 42 years.
*  The Raiders played in Los Angeles for 13 years.
*  The Raiders' season-ticket base during their final year in L.A. at the
    Coliseum was less than 18,000.
*  The Jan. 12 vote of the NFL owners in Houston was 30-2 in favor of
the Inglewood Stadium, backed by St. Louis Rams multibillionaire
owner Stan Kroenke. Kroenke is the second-richest owner in the
NFL. Paul Allen of the Seattle Seahawks is No. 1.
*  The NFL is a major proponent of two teams playing in one mega-
stadium in large cities. The New York Jets and New York Giants are        the No. 1 shining example.
*  Now, with the approval of the Inglewood Stadium as the new home
of the former St. Louis Rams, the opportunity of another two-team
option is available with the San Diego Chargers and possibly the             Oakland Raiders. The Chargers have the first option to join the
    Rams.
*  The NFL wanted the Raiders to play in a joint-use stadium with the
San Francisco 49ers, but the late Al Davis refused to proceed with
those discussions in 2007-08. Mark Davis has said he has zero
interest in becoming a tenant at Levi's Stadium.
*  Mark has also stated he is more than willing to move hundreds of
miles south to share a stadium in Southern California.
*  The Raiders now play in the smallest-capacity stadium in the NFL, at
     56,057.
*  There is a tarp blocking off 11,000 thousand seats at the Coliseum
that was rolled out before the 2013 season.
*  The Raiders have one of the lowest naming-rights deals in the NFL,
     at $600,000 from O.co (Overstock.com.).
*  Under their just-concluded lease, the Raiders paid $400,000 a year
in rent and $525,000 for their headquarters and practice facility in
     Alameda.
*  The Raiders received $1.5 million for day-of-game concession sales,
a $477,000 share for naming rights (O.co Coliseum) and $685,000
     for club-seat fees.
*  The city and county pay for game-day expenses, including ticket
takers, staffing, security, utilities, field maintenance and
garbage/recycling. The $48.3 million total was paid by the Joint
     Powers Authority.
*  Levi's Stadium is only 35.1 miles from the team's Harbor Bay Isle
offices and training facility in Alameda.
*  The A's have multiple options to block a new Raiders stadium deal.
*  The Raiders have multiple options to block a new A's stadium deal.
*  The complicated transportation infrastructure that is already in
place and functioning at the O.co Coliseum complex would cost
billions of dollars in any other location.
*  The A's 81 major-league baseball games bring in more revenue to
Oakland and Alameda County than 10 football games.
* $12.5 million on debt payments is still owed on the Coliseum.
*  In 1995, Oakland-Alameda County helped the Raiders by approving
$150 million worth of renovations to the Coliseum, which also
    obtained a $50 million loan.
*  The general plans for a smaller stadium talked about by Mark Davis
would preclude Oakland from ever hosting a Super Bowl. The NFL
     requires at least 70,000 seats.
*  The NFL has agreed to loan the Raiders an additional $100 million
for their stadium effort in Oakland.
*  Mark Davis has said the team has $600 million that they are
    bringing to the table.
*  A brand-new stadium would cost a minimum of $1 billion.
*  A team needs approval of 24 of the 32 NFL owners to move to
    another city.

Fiction
*  The Raiders have agreed to a lease with Oakland-Alameda County
for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. (Although they have an option to do
    so.)
*  The Raiders have a strategic long-term plan to build a new stadium
in Oakland that could be activated in the immediate future.
*  The Raiders have a strategic long-term plan to move to a specific
     location outside Oakland.
*  The Raiders will move to Inglewood if the Chargers pass on the
opportunity. Not over the opposition of the 31 other NFL owners.
*  The Raiders will move to San Antonio. Not over the opposition of
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Texans owner Bob McNair.
*  Raider Nation could crowd fund or own shares of the team. The NFL
does not allow this type of team ownership.
*  Oakland and Alameda County will use public money to help build a
    new Raiders stadium.
*  The Raiders are 100% owned by Carol and Mark Davis. They have
minority partners. David Abrams and Paul Leff paid approximately
$150 million for a limited position several years ago. They do not
have a first right to purchase the team if it is for sale.
*  Larry Ellison is going to buy the Raiders.
*  The team has formally purchased or leased in Oakland or publicly
unveiled a comprehensive stadium-financing concept here,
although Mark Davis has previously said he would like to build on
     the Coliseum site.
*  Mark Davis has said the team has $600 million they will bring to the
table to build a new stadium.

"You're traveling through another dimension: a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of one's imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: The Raiders' Zone!"

Tune in next week for the next chapter.
